bump…? haha anyone?

You will care when you’re living at home with mom and dad when you’re 30 still trying to pay off your debt.

Bookmarked. I want to see how this turns out.

Why is it always NYU…?

@Shrinkrap. haha yeah we’ll see how this goes. Though, I’m just looking for some chance action here.

@noimagination. And NYU, cause it’s one of the only top schools with a large student body and almost no money for the waves of students applying.

@poetgrl. I know it’s going to be a lot of money but I feel that the opportunities for advancement, my ambition and career goals wil help me to pay it off in a reasonable amount of time. I don’t plan to be 65 and still paying back student loans. Depend ing on where I gain employment after my masters and such, I hope to have things paid off by age 45 latest? (oh wow haha. I love how I question myself at that statement) Well anyway, I did.t really intend for this to be a NYU’s finaid sucks thread.

You seem like a match for NYU Steinhardt, BUT, and I hate to be the one to come right out and say it:

this is not a good idea.

I’m a senior in Media, Culture, Communications and believe me, THIS IS NOT A DEGREE TO GO INTO 150K DEBT FOR.

I love NYU to death, and I’m the first to defend my major choice to people, but I would not take on that much debt for a communications degree. The job market out there is still pretty brutal for a communications major, unless you can bring some secondary skill to the table (graphic design, computer programming, etc). I’m PhD track, but many of my friends who graduated with communications degrees STILL DO NOT HAVE JOBS. The ones that DO have jobs, are those with additional skills.

I love my department and I feel like I’ve learned a lot, but I still think this is not the best idea. Best of luck to you.

^wow. Reality check. It honestly never crossed my mind as to whether or not I would be able to find a job. Hmm this calls for a little more consideration…

Everything shrank during the recession. Combined with everything going to blogs/online, things that used to be awesome for communications majors, (publishing/magazines/advertising) suddenly became very competitive.

Now, I’m not saying that communications is a bad major choice. It’s very broad and that can be to your advantage. The people I know who landed jobs before or after graduation are working in video games, public relations, at non-profits or doing marketing. If you are going to be an MCC major, I would 100% make sure you minor in something practical or that you take classes in something that will give you marketable skills. I’ve taken digital photography (Photoshop) and I do research within NYU with another professor.

I still encourage you to apply to NYU, because you won’t know what your financial aid package is unless you apply.

My D is doing a semester at NYU now, which includes an unpaid internship in this field (“ARTS & MEDIA”). She must have applied to at least twenty, to end up with one that is just okay. Having fun, though.

My main decision in deciding to apply despite the finaid was to just get in and then hope that I win the financial aid lottery and get a decent amount of money. After rereading numerous financial aid threads I’ve seen so much variation. From kids planning to skip meals in order to attend, to students who have gotten over 35k in aid. Total costs ranging from 50-65k and etc. I plan to have a reasonable minor (leaning towards marketing or economics) and I hope this will help me in the job market.

NYU is an amazing place to gain experience and make connections even while as a freshman or sophmore. I kept on trying to find reasons as to why I should not attend, kept tryingt o be reasonable about the money issue, boggled my mind as to how to find a way to afford this education and experience and I find that I’m still confused.

I just have to see where things go, because I just can’t help but imagine myslef in New York.

Just out of interest, have you been to NYC?

In any case, it’s okay to apply if and only if you avoid becoming too attached and remain capable of making a sound, logical decision in the spring. You never know, you might get lucky.

Yes, I have been to New York, which is why I’m having so much trouble with this decision. At first, I just knew about the schhol, looked at it online and talked about it with others I was only thinking of the prestige. After seeing the city, the college and everything that entails my mind just keeps going back to the college. I love the program I love the atmosphere, but not if I’m going to spend 4+ years living like a scrooge and not being able to fully enjoy what the city has to offer. If my finaid leaves me with more than 80k in debt (please, pleease, please be less than 80k) then I will just have to force myself not to go to NYU. Because as misssamericanpie pointed out, it really isn’t worth it. I need to concentrate on my grad school debt I guess.

Ok I’m done with my money rant. I’m so close to a meltdown, back to chances haha.

unless you are going to attend Stern, please, for your parent’s sake, do not attend NYU if you’re going to be in 100k debt. You will thank me later.

I had similar stats to yours but i didn’t get in and i kind of know why. First of all, my teacher recs sucked, and second, my secondary app sucked. NYU wants you to be VERY creative. DONT look past it. I read some people’s answers and they were really good and that’s why they got in and i didn’t. ED did not help me! But like one answer was like I’m going to go eat “dirty ice cream” with lady gaga and “just dance” in central park while we put on our poker face.

Haha creative, and sorry to hear you didnt get in(makes me a little nervous). Ok. Yeah I know my stats aren’t stupendous, so when I wrote my essays I tried to be as creative as possible. However, It’s kinda hard considering the answers can only be about 80 words long but I thought about it for a long time and I think theyre super unique. Thanks for the heads up

Another possibility (and I did this) is to attend another University for freshman and sophomore year, and transfer during the spring of your soph year or fall of your junior year.

Some benefits include being able to take your liberal arts requirements for much cheaper, and to save money overall.

If you are a competitive candidate as a high schooler, you will STILL be a competitive transfer applicant.

You’ll have two to two and a half years to make connections in NYC, and you’ll graduate with NYU Steinhardt on your diploma. None of your employers ever have to know that you transferred. A lot of the really good internships (CBS, BBDO, NBC, ABC) are only open to upperclassmen anyway. Plus, your GPA resets after you transfer.

I started spring of my sophomore year at NYU and I immediately started with ALL media classes. If you make your schedules carefully, you can absolutely graduate on time. This is another option if you find that come spring 2011, your FinAid package is less than desirable.

One BIG con is that financial aid for transfers SUCKS, so might end up having to pay in full for the last two years anyway. But you’ll still save some money overall.

Paying tuition in full the last to years could be around 100k which seems like a lot for only two years of the NYU experience when the possibility of going all four years would in a bad finaid case set me back around 150k. I know 50k is a big difference, but in terms of how long I would be at NYu it seems aslomst miniscule. I had thought about transferring to NYU, depending on where else I get acepted and all of my finaid packages.

Althoug , if i do end up transfering I hope I dont get Nothing is aid (has that happened a lot?)
