I don't get it....

Okay, so everyone on here is always saying how hard it is to get into U of M. And some of you guys have gotten rejected when your stats make you seem like the ideal students. Three girls from my school with average activities, no leadership positions and 3.5 gpas got into U of M with a 22, 26, and 28. It has a 51% acceptance rate, right? I don't even think I want to apply with my 23 ACT and 3.5 GPA. I thought I would have a good shot because I have pretty nice club activities and I fall into the top 7% of my class, but now I just don’t know. Is it even worth applying? :(

If someone from your school with a 22 ACT got in (with average activities, no leadership and 3.5 GPA), then why wouldn’t you apply with a 23? There obviously are no guarantees, but you will never get in if you don’t apply. :)

If you want to go to Michigan then apply to Michigan. I’d say the 50 bucks you spend on an application is better than wondering “What if?” This is your life, after all. And no the acceptance rate is not 51%. I think it’s around 42% after last year and will be dropping further this year.

GoSomethingBlue, you never know. Students get into many top universities (including Harvard, Princeton and Yale) with similar stats. I know several students who got into Harvard and Stanford with sub 1900 SAT scores. I know a girl who got into Duke last year with a 3.1 GPA and a 1550 (including the W section) on the SAT. All of those cases, including the three girls at your school, are exceptions. For every applicant that gets into those schools with such stats, 10 or more will be rejected.

For the record, Michigan’s acceptance rate last year was 39% (51% is the acceptance rate from two years ago). This year, Michigan’s acceptance rate will probably drop to ~30%.

GoSomething, If I had to guess the people with the 22 and 26 that got in were probably URMs. At pretty much any school, if you are an URM, it is very easy to get in.

I can’t believe I’m the first to question whether the OP really has all the facts about the students he’s saying got in. What year was this cause obviously decisions haven’t been released this year? And no, the acceptance rate is not 51%, it will probably drop into the 30’s this year. You can apply if you want, but it’s a major reach.

Well there is a white guy down my hall who got in with a 24 ACT. He said he had a solid GPA and nothing special in terms of extra curriculars. That’s why I didn’t question him.

When will people understand that college acceptances aren’t determined by some mathematical formula?

Exactly Yakyu. There are many varriables to consider. One can somewhat predict the outcome, but there are going to be some exceptions. When a university has 40,000 applicants and admits over 15,000 of them, you are going to have hundreds of exceptions. It is wise not to measure one’s chances based on those exceptions.

Thanks for all of the answers, people. I guess I’ll just hope for the best…although that acceptance rate is frightening. :0 :)

GoSomethingBlue I would recommend you apply to MSU and GVSU, where your stats are more in the “normal” range.

I will try MSU. U of M is just my reach school.

I bet the three girls were recruited women basketball players who could get rebounds.

^^^^LOL. You must have seen that press conference. :-)

Why are their admission rates decreasing? shouldn’t they be increasing so more people can pay them?

The class sizes at Michigan have increased, and they’re already huge. There’s a limit to how many more people you can take.

There’s no limit to how low you can make the admissions rate, since you can always get more people to apply. That’s what’s going on here.

GoSomethingBlue I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but thats the nice thing about online message boards. With your stats unless you have a hook (URM, First Gen College Student) or are from a top high school in Michigan (Cranbrook, Country Day, Bloomfield Hills Andover, etc.) the chances of you being deferred to Michigan are very high.

Also, with it being somewhat late in the admissions game, you also have a fairly high chance of being deferred at MSU and a decent chance of being deferred/7th semester grades at GVSU, though I think they would still probably let you in. Both MSU and GVSU have increased their applications in the past couple of years and are harder to get into than people think, just not nearly as hard as U of M.

Then again being in the top 7% of your class is good, but what kind of grade deflation do you have at your school so that a 3.5 GPA is top 7%? Usually a 3.5 GPA is around top 30-35%.

Saddens me that you never mentioned the IA… anyways, do you think a 3.78 and a 32 from IA would give me a chance?

^ You’re right IA is a big feeder school to UofM. What are your other stats?
