I don't know if I should apply but I'm seriously interested in U Chicago

Fairly competative public school
Send about 25% of students to top 100 schools
GPA: 4.5
Class Rank 15 out of 400 top 5%
SAT I 1900 can probably bring up to around a 2000
ACT 29
Most vigorous course load
Scored 4 or higher on the four AP's I took Junior Year
My transcript has a lot of really low A's that inflate my GPA. Our school has a a weird scale where 90-100 is an A, 80-89 is a B 70-79 is a C and 70 below is failing. My school GPA is based on A's are 5's in Pre-AP or AP classes and 4's in regular classes and so on. I havent calculated my UW GPA but I think it will be low because a lot of my 5's for A's in AP classes have been low A's like 90-93's. I think this could really hurt me when the grades are unweighted.

Expecting extremely good rec's and essays

I am extremely interested in U of Chicago and I truly think i will be able to write some great essays. i know that alot of the decision is based soley on what I just stated about the essays but suppose that my essays and rec's are phenomenal what do you think my chances are???

I don't think you can count on anybody on these boards to give you accurate readings as far as your chances go, but a) if you are interested in the school, there's no reason you shouldn't apply, and b) your numbers put you in the range of admittance.

Your scores look alot like mine. Strong weighted GPA, 7 AP/IB courses senior year, under 2000 SAT (Mine is 1970 and i'm retaking soon).

I think we have a shot as long as our essays show that we're really interested and intelligent.

I would go for it. UChicago is always looking to pick up more students from the South, you have strong stats, and the adcoms seem to know which publics and privates in Texas are hot and which are not.
