I’m currently working on college applications, and several of the schools I am applying to require a recommendation from your counselor. My school has almost 1900 kids, so I hardly know my guidance counselor. Is there anything that I need to do to ensure my recommendation from her is good, or should I just send her my resume and let her write it?
If possible make an appointment to meet her so you can talk for a few minutes about where you plan to apply and you can give her your resume in person.
That would be common to any large public high school. Make sure your resume has your interests and ECs, as she or he will already know all about your academics. When did you last have contact? It is possible to make an appointment to hand in your resume and a brief chat about your application. Go to the office and make an appointment. If you are applying for a lot of reach schools that require more than average legwork be prepared to be chasing up paperwork. GCs get swamped.
@Sybylla Yes I am applying to several reach schools so I need to make sure my recs and essays are great. I’ll schedule an appointment to talk with her. I have talked with her more than most of my friends have with their counselors and she has had to test me for the SAT and subject tests a few times in the past because I have extra time.
Also know that college admission officers understand that some public schools have a very high number of students assigned to each guidance counselor and they don’t expect highly personalized letters in those cases. Be sure to chose teachers who know you to write your LORs.
Agreed, it’s very common and all colleges know this. Certainly follow the suggestions already given, bit to give you some peace of mind, here is what MIT says:
