Good day to whomever might be reading this. After spending time on this site I have learned that majoring in pre-law, political science, or criminal justice is the worst path to take in order to go to law school. I was suggested that instead, I major in something unrelated to the law but yet is easy enough to get a high GPA. I was thinking of majoring in finance and minoring in phycology, however as I look at the course work I will be battling for the next 2 years, I don’t seem interested. Apart from the law, there is nothing that interests me, any recommendations as to what I should do?
Study what is of interest to you.
I think that it is poor advice to suggest that one should prepare for law school by taking an easy major in order to earn a high GPA. Lack of a challenging curriculum is likely to be reflected in one’s LSAT score. THe LSAT is the single most important admissions factor for law school.
I do agree that criminal justice is a poor major for one intending to go to law school. Criminal justice majors tend to perform the worst among many majors on the LSAT exam.
I have seen English as a recommended major for law school because the reading, comprehension, research, and writing skills are ones that come in very handy. Perhaps a major in something in the social studies area with a minor in English might be a path to consider.
Philosophy, History & English are all solid majors for law school preparation.
Any traditional liberal arts major is fine for law school. A major (like philosophy or some science majors) that works on critical thinking skills really helps.
But major in something of interest, and you will earn better grades. If you are a quant-type and Finance is your thing, go for it.
IMO, English (and comp lit) can be hit and miss wrt to reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
There’s nothing wrong with majoring in political science/government. The concern is that should you decide not to attend law school, what does one do with a BA in poly sci? It’s always best to have a Plan B, if possible.
And please be aware that you’ll get a lot of advice on this forum from individuals who have never attended law school.
That’s one of the problems I seem to be experiencing though, very few things are of interest to me.
I shall take that in mind, thank you. That’s why I wanted to pursue finance so that if law school does not work out, my plan B is business.
plenty of business majors go to law school, so if that is your interest, go for it.
You need to follow your passion - and I do not agree with the advice to avoid the majors you note because they are bad for Law School. My D is a 1L at a top 30, and she was a Criminal Justice/Psychology Double Major.
So consider a Double Major as it’s really not a lot more classes than a minor, that shows a broader commitment and also let’s you balance. I do like the English recommendation if you like that path, as it’s true that Law School is a lot about reading for understanding and writing. Were also told by her second choice that STEM majors are strongly considered, and we were surprised when they said they consider Psychology a STEM major…my whole point is, major in something you have passion about, you will do better and be happier.
