I don't know what to do -HELP!!! PLEASE!!!!

Senior girl from public HS in relatively affluent suburb of NYC - GPA 4.174(W)/3.97(UW), Editor of paper, CoCaptain Girls Varsity Tennis team (county champs 2007), founding member of community service club in school, SATs 710 (CR), 690 (M), 800 (W). SAT2s 700(US Hist), 670 (Math I). Taking total of 6 AP classes. Taking 2 more SAT2s 10/08(so hopefully the 670 won't "count") and maybe SATs again 11/08. Other extracurrics - peer leader at synagogue, host to foreign exchange student and participated in cultural exchange/immersion program in Spain, paid summer internship at local newspaper, worked in local food shop, involved in school political organization. Nat'l Honor Society, French Honor Society, High Honor Roll every marking period in HS. SO.....here's the big question - CAN I GET INTO BROWN ED????? (If not, what about Tufts, Northwestern (Medill), Johns Hopkins, Cornell, U Penn, Wesleyan, Georgetown - REGULAR DECISION???) Thanks so much for your help/advice/opinion - I VALUE IT!!

GPA - Very Good
ECs - Strong but nothing really stands out
SATs - A little on the weak side. Good'ish

Work on your SATs (including the SAT IIs). Bringing those up to 740+ in every area will do a lot for your chances.

Just note that Brown, Cornell, UPenn...the ivies...are always iffy. The others on your list seem to be matches, I would say. Provided you bring up your test scores, of course.

Oh, and for future reference...format your list.

Try and pull up your SAT's

Thanks to both of you - I am thinking it may be worth me giving the SATs another shot in November??...

Give them another shot in Nov, but make sure you prepare for them. Pick up a copy of the Official SAT Guide by College Board and plow through one of the tests every week over the next 8 weeks. Don't just take them of course, but study your wrong answers (and your right ones) and try to improve.

Hi london42689!

Wow... from your post I can tell that you're either a very nervous applicant or you're just plain hyper. Before we begin, I'll say this: Cool down!

Your GPA is awesome at a 3.97, and your 6 AP classes make your GPA sound even better. To make you feel better, your GPA is .14 higher than mine, so obviously, you'll have a better chance than I will at Brown ... but this is not the case. I'll get to that part later. Your SAT score of 2200 is strong and places you in the Top 1%. (After reading so many posts on CC, I can say that alot of CCers have that 2200s ... I actually feel sorry for admission officers who have to do this for 20 hours straight!) Contrary to the previous posters, your SAT IIs scores are quite fine. SAT IIs are considered supplementary to your SAT Is. It's not like getting a 700 on a SAT Subject will make admission officers go, "WHAAAAAT? This girl got a 700 on this SAT test!!! We'll just have to reject her!" Not very likely. Remember, admission officers evaluate your application holistically. Not one factor can be the sole cause of rejection.

ECs ... I wouldn't say that they are strong, but they're not distinctive. In fact, they seem very spread out ... as if you were attempting to fill up your app. If you particularly enjoyed a single activity, try to convey your passion for that activity in your activity essay. Show them what makes you love that EC so much. Don't just say, "I helped students in need as a tutor at an elementary school." That doesn't really say much. In fact, it sounds dry. try to channel your energy and passion from college admissions to your essay. I think that way, college admission officers will be intrigued by your essay ... don't you think? In fact, your essays are one of the most important components of your app. (That's what a Brown admission officer told me) They want to know that you're human!

Overall, you're the typical good student in HS. Try to separate yourself from the crowd by writing stand-out essays ... you seem to have a lot of energy and passion ... demonstrate that with your essays!

Chances:
Brown: Reach (I know. I killed all hope didn't I? It's a reach for everyone ...)
Tufts: Match
Northwestern: Match (-> Medill not so sure, but heard it's really prestigious)
JHU: Match
Cornell: Match
UPenn: Slight reach
Wesleyan: Not familiar enough with admissions here
Georgetown: Good match

See? You did pretty well here. Don't be too uptight. You'll be fine!

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to PM me! When I help others, somehow it helps me relieve stress caused by college admissions. (yes wierd isn't it?)
-ab2013

thanks so much, ab2013 and gutter. I'm pretty sure I'm going to take the SAT again in Nov and hopefully boost my scores a little. I'd feel more confident with slightly higher scores

I would recommend visiting the site Uchance.com - Home If you enter in your stats (GPA, SAT, etc.) it will give you your statistical chance (a percentage) of being accepted into any school. It doesn't take into account factors like essays and extracurriculars but it's definitely good for coming up with a list of schools that fall in all 3 categories (safety, 50/50, and best-bet). I hope this helps you and good luck!

thanks redspur! I'm going to check out that site now!

bump........
