questions: how many adv. classes have you taken, what leadership positions do you hold, what ECs have you been involved in? These are all factors.

Schools like an upward trend in grades, and some schools don't focus as much on freshman scores as they do on sophomore, junior, and senior year scores. The fact that you improved so much will look good, even though your GPA is low for some of the schools on your list.

Columbia, duke, jhu, and cornell are reaches, although if you have any great ECs that would increase your chances.

im ukrainian (came here when i was three yrs old)
i am on the math team (4 yrs) - team captain sometimes
i am on varsity tennis (3yrs) nothing held here

this year my hardest class is organic chem (3 periods long) - one of the few schools in the country that offers this class

I understand most of my schools are incredible reaches but why not try my chances - it woudn't hurt, would it?
