I don't know what to do

Well, I have no idea what I am going to do as of now, with the may 1st deadline rolling around the corner. I am so confused. I already know I am going to transfer, because I want to go to a better theater/music school.

But these are the schools I am considering for freshman/sophmore years:

UC Riverside
Santa Clara University
CSU Long Beach
SF State

Schools I'm considering for transfer:

UCLA
HYC
Juilliard

I am worried about money, but I still want a good school that won't be a big struggle to transfer from. Also, I know that Santa Clara is on the quarter system, and I am worried those units might not easily transfer to a new school.

Yes, I know it is very hard to transfer, I would just like the best advice on where I should go, oh, and how to pay for it. I know I can't get all the answers here, but anything will help.

Thanks

Oh, and I am waitlisted at Fordham, which I would go to if I got in. Any suggestions on how to get off the wait list?

Thanks Again

this is scaring me. i hope i get off the waitlist.

sorry if this is a long/difficult question.

Hi, I'm not from US so I'm not sure about the rest of the colleges on your list but Fordham has an excellent business prorgram and is widely known because of it. I'm not sure Fordham is the best bet for liberal arts. The only way you can be absolutely certain about your choice is to get the best info on all the liberal arts colleges, their rankings, requirements, future prospects and all and then make an informed decision. You can get all this information at one place from America's Best Colleges 2007 book. Im from Pakistan and a transfer student and so didnt know squat about which school to chose, information from this book really helped. I think there is an online subscription version too at usnews.com. Do not rely completely on information you get from people on forums, they can misguide you unintentionally. Most of what you get from here are personal opinions. Only you can tell which school is the best for you so I advice getting all the information you can about your choices and the others too and then decide for the one that suits you best. I know its a pretty general answer but I think this is the right way to go.

Is there a part of California in which you would prefer to live?

well, not really. I mean I like so cal better, because i live in the Bay Area right now, and want to leave. But, financially, i dont know.

i am stressed. i just don't know what to do. And I feel sort of bad, because everyone keeps asking me, parents, friends, teachers, and I don't know.

i mean. Largely, i feel as though... I'm talking to myself. haha-But this is a good way to get out frustration. I mean I want to go to a college, but then I feel its soo expensive. And, I don't know if its worth it in the long run. I mean I want to transfer to one after two years, but I'm thinking it might be better just to go to community college for two to save money.. But then it might be harder trying to transfer to a four year out of state school. Making it practically impossible to transfer to a school like Yale or Columbia or possibly even NYU for voice.

Ofcourse its gonna be worth it to go to college. Do not even think about community colleges if you want to transfer to the likes of Columbia and NYU. Go to a moderate school, apply for all the scholarships and financial aids there are, tough it out for one year and then transfer. Once you are a Columbia or Yale or NYU graduate you will see it was all worth it.

that makes me really want to work hard and succeed in school. If there is a possibility I want to take it. I suppose, although this year is mostly set, next year I can keep trying to apply for scholarships. And i can get a job over the summer to make money

Also, should I try to apply for sophmore year at NYU, and then try to transfer to Yale or Columbia. Or should I just try to stick it out 2 years at my current school and then transfer? Would it look bad if I transferred twice?

Thanks

Don't transfer twice...it will be way too much work and way too much upheaval in your life. Go to whatever school you like the best and will be the happiest at, and work your rear off there for a couple of years.

That said though....don't become too obsessed with Yale or Columbia, because quite frankly, the chances of transfer admission are TINY and will not be increasing anytime soon. If you want to be sobered, head on over to the Yale, Columbia, and even NYU forums and see who got waitlisted/rejected and then consider that your transfer chances (at least for Ivies) are probably less than freshmen applicants. I don't want to be harsh, and it's fine to still work really hard and go for it, but even NYU (especially voice) is a school that you can hardly waltz into.

Plus, in my experience, even an excellent voice and very, very strong academic credentials aren't necessarily good enough for a Yale. I personally know someone who applied to the music program at Yale this year with credentials like this and was rejected, just like me and pretty much everyone else who applies to Yale.

Why don't you pick the school you like best and actually go there and see if you like it?
I went to my last choice school almost positive that I would transfer to an Ivy or top school after my first year (and considering my grades/etc, I'm positive I would have gotten in at least somewhere as a transfer). But I actually really like it here now.

Ask this question again in 7 or 8 months, if you still feel like asking it.

I decided on going to santa monica community college. I like the programs (honors and music). I feel that it is a good fit for my first two years of college. Hopefully, I can transfer to ucla or usc. And, I will try, even though it seems hopeless, at Yale and Columbia.

Thanks for the replies!

AH

I just found out right now that SCU will give me 15,000 in FA if i go there. I don't know what to do. Cause' if i go to community college I will have an easier time transferring to ucla, usc, probably.

I just met a kid goin to SMC. You'll meet plenty of kool people there. I would suggest going to SMC and transferring to a UC.

but if i want to transfer to a private university isn't it better to go to another private university? i don't know, cause the only uc im interested in is ucla, cause that's the only one that has a strong dept. in my major.
