Hey guys! i'm having trouble deciding where to apply for universities. i want to reach for the top universities, but i'm not sure whether or not i can get in based on what i have. and i'm not concerned about whether or not they are good in premed.

there are the PRIVATE schools i chose, but i hope to narrow they down to 6 or 7
****Johns Hopkins, USC, Tufts U., U. Washington in ST.louis, NYU, Cornell U. U. of Chicago,Boston U. Darthmouth College.

my sat I :1980
Sat II math II 750
sat II chem 710
SAT II chinese 800

GPA around 4.3 weighted

bout 300 community service hours
volunteer at American red cross (event coordination)
co-founder of a club. and other positions

i'm scared that i'm only taking 5 classes my senior year. but they are all honors/ap
ap physics, ap spanish, apcalc bc, hon orchestra, ap lit

please make some comment about my situation. thank you all. oh and by the way, my school's API is 870, im sure that matters too

You absolutely must have safeties.

I don’t think you have good odds at any of those reach schools unless you can significantly raise that SAT score.

would you consider NYU as my safety?

^ NO! You are barely above the 25%ile for scores at NYU. It is a reach (albeit a lower reach than the others).

How much can you afford to pay?
What state do you live in?

wow really? but i thought NYU has 64% adm rate… i live in CA and i can probably pay half of the tuition

NYU is also miserable for financial aid.

Why are there no UCs on your list? Perhaps you just didn’t mention them?

yeah, what i listed where my private colleges. i’m also applying to UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCLA, ,UCD

Okay, that’s a little better. I would still recommend adding a true safety where you are guaranteed admission and a workable financial package.

if my SAT were 100 more, would that make it possible?

I would consider some of the CA schools and BU your safeties.

You need to be above 700 in all sections of the SAT, preferable well above in CR and/or Math, to have a good shot at Dartmouth and some of your other reaches. Yes, people with lower scores do get in. But…the student with scores in the 600s who gets in is probably bringing something else to the table. What that would be in your case is unclear from what you have told us.

Are you Chinese? Is Chinese a second language you studied in school, or one you use at home? If the latter your 800 in Chinese is meaningless. Everyone knows that the test is aimed at kids who started to learn Chinese in HS, and is ridiculously easy for someone who is a native speaker. Taking that one out of the mix, you could use another good SATII, preferably above 750.

What is your unweighted GPA? Is your transcript going to show all As with a few Bs? Is your GC going to check the “most rigorous” box? Do you have an approximate class rank?
