bump to get a response

Go to the best school you can get into and plan to transfer. No school you can get into now is on ib recruitment lists. SAT scores also count a lot to ibankers, you'll find most had 1500 (old) plus, so plan to retake.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that most people that go into banking had a 1500 SAT, but it is something they ask and a high score is a way to stand out.

As far as UT, I've just heard that from a variety of people. I saw an article in either NYT or WSJ a while back refrencing it too, but don't remember how long ago it was.

need more input!! :|

Indiana's not a reach. You'll get in there. However, I don't see you getting into a better B-School than IU. I also think you'll get into Ohio State and Purdue. And by the way, Indiana gets recruited for I-Banking, they sent in around 70 kids last year (even though it seems like no one here wants to do it). There was an article on Business Week about a IU grad working at Goldman Sachs, so don't say they don't get into I-Banks and you need much higher SATs, because that's not true.

thanks for the insight A2Wolves6... :)

bump anymore!?

Any more pinput!?!?

I think you should go for Penn State.

Im thinking so to.. probably IU or Penn State.

Penn State has the most alumni of any college I believe. Smeal is better than Indiana's (in my opinion) and the school is very fun going and well known. Great sports, great location, great social life, and just a good college experience.

So is Penn St. a better option then IU Anyone!?

No, it's not. They rank behind it in essentially every ranking and every disciple for a reason. I didn't even apply there because I knew it would be a waste, and i'd take IU even if I got in.

Trust Business Week's and US News' (hundreds of educated faculty and senior members). People have to pay to hear what they say. They're typically right.

I think it's more fun and has a better social life. It has more alumni which can help you get jobs and it has a good job network. Wolves here is just biased towards his own university which is fine.. Here's the overall Us News Business which is more accurate than just focused rankings since once you get outside of Stern it is a bit messy.

For you I'd aim for: Penn State, Indiana, USC, Purdue, Illinois, Bentley, and Babson. I wrote the "in my opinion" part because I feel a better alumni/network is more important. In education alone I believe Indiana has a slight edge over Penn State. Still make sure you visit all your schools and pick one based on fit as well as good education.

Those rankings aren't that great either. PSU has SAT avg 100 points higher than IU with 40% in top 10% of hs class compared to 25% for IU, so while maybe resources or the profs are better or whatever contibutes to that rating, the academic student quality is lower at IU than PSU. I can't imagine that all the best students at IU are congregating at the business school. Maybe, someone will have numbers on this.

Similarly, Georgetown, Notre Dame, BC all rank below PSU and IU on this ranking despite having much higher academic quality student body with much more access to the more sought after (investment banking, consulting) type jobs.

Since when do average SAT's have anything to do with the connections and job placement at the business schools? After all, isn't that why you go to college? Anyways, the average SAT at Kelley is 1189, and Smeal is 1197, 8 points different, big whoop. There is no difference in academic quality. And IU sends more students to Investment Banking and Consulting each year than PSU, so what makes you think PSU has more access to these jobs?

Yes, Penn State has a larger B-School, and a larger alumni network. But that means less individualized attention during school, (student to teacher ratio at PSU is a ridiculous 1-43, Indiana is 1-20) and harder to get a job, because your competition is larger and the number of companies recruiting are similar.

You can find any business rankings you want, and on all of them IU will be ranked ahead of PSU, on both the graduate and undergraduate level. There is more to a business school than SAT scores in the student body. IU has better job placement than Georgetown and BC, that's why they're rated higher in the rankings.

I'm not biased towards my own university, I know however, that 10 is better than 31, and that 11 is better than 18. It's not rocket science.

I didn't say that PSU had better access than IU in job placement. I was just questioning what made IU better. SATs have something to do with job placement because employers are seeking out the brightest students and SATs are an indicator of bright students. Interviewers would not be asking for them if they didn't consider them important.

From what I saw in my and my friends' analyst classes and subsequently in getting an MBA, Georgetown, BC, Notre Dame alums were way more represented than IU. I'm not at all biased here because I didn't go to any of these schools; just reporting on what I've seen in my experiences. So, I don't know what factors determine those rankings, but from what I've seen, they are in no way based on student academic quality or job and grad school placement. IU is a solid school and appears especially strong for business, but don't see why anyone would choose it OOS or for other financial/fit reasons over Georgetown, Notre Dame, BC.

Hey guys thanks for the constant info .... :) Well the school that I want to go to is basically one in which i have a good chance of being recruited given the fact that I do well in School. And I also want to know if it'd be better to go to a school taht's better overall but lower than IU, Finance-wise, or if I should go to a school like IU, which is ranked high in Finance, but not ranked as high as Notre Dame overall.

I've always thought that it's much better to go to a school that ranked high overall than ranked in one program. Majors change, new interests develop, many circumstances potentially change and you grow more from exposure to more diverse, accomplished classmates. i don't know how much of your decision you really want to place on either criteria, but would go with overall appeal as being better than specific major.

Penn State has a peer assessment rating of 3.8, Indiana of 3.7, there's really no difference in quality overall. I'll give you Georgetown (4.0) and Notre Dame (3.9), but I wouldn't agree that Boston College is a better school judging their peer assessment ratings (3.5) and the fact that they rank behind IU in every business category.

Also, IU isn't ranked just high in their B-School. Music, Psychology, Journalism, SPEA (#1), Kinesiology, all are in the top 10 in the nation. So if you need to change your major, you should have no trouble finding a job and being recruited.
