I don't understand this credit thingy

I'm a little bit flustered about this thing though. I'm doing A-levels and Cornell gives credits for them and I'm doing 4 subjects and if I get all As in them it might amount to 36 credits. Does that mean I can skip freshmen year or Cornell doesn't give and would still make me do freshman year? And how many credits do you need to complete your freshman year by the way?

Cornell will accept certain credits, allowing you to place out of some entry level courses often taken by freshmen. This doesn’t mean you are skipping freshman year, you will just have the ability to start out in higher level courses and possibly be able to graduate early if you so choose.

Technically, to be a full time student you need to take 12 credits a semester, so 24 credits for freshman year, but the distribution requirements for most colleges within Cornell necessitate a certain number of credits/specific courses in order to graduate, so YMMV. (ie Arts and Sciences: [Degree Requirements](http://as.cornell.edu/academics/degree-req.cfm))

First off if you’re doing 4 subjects, they typically give you 3-4 credits a subject so unless I’m misunderstanding something you would be getting 12-16 credits, not 36.

As TskDbx said, no matter how many credits you come in with you don’t “skip freshman year” per se because you’re first year is always “freshman year,” you just might be able to graduate early if you plan everything correctly.

However, I actually did have about 33 AP credits (for 11 subjects), but my school only lets you use 15 of them towards your requirements. I think (not sure) that only A&S and Engineering lets you use as many as you want.

Also, they only take some subjects. For instance, I got a 5 on AP Stats but it isn’t accepted for any credit—you have to take Stats at Cornell if it is required for your major. Plus, there are usually a lot of specific requirements for your major (depending on your major) that you couldn’t possibly get credit for through APs/A-levels, and depending on how you schedule everything this could prevent you from graduating early even if you were granted 33-36 AP Credits

Do these help? or is this what you’re already looking at?

[Credit and Placement](http://as.cornell.edu/information/orientation/credit.cfm)

I took the Singapore GCE A-Levels last year & I’m at Cornell college of Engineering now. I got around 20+ credits with 4 H2 subjects. I’m not sure which country you’re from but 36 credits from A-levels doesn’t sound very possible. And not all credits are accepted by engineering (eg. non-claculus math is counted for A&S but not engineering I think).

And credits are useful for skipping the basic classes, but you’re still considered a freshman when you enter. The classes you take are almost all up to you (refer to the cornell engineering handbook, if you have credits for the 1000x level classes, you can then move on to the 2000x level classes in your first year) you enroll in them yourself, as long as they satisfy certain requirements (again, refer to engineering handbook.)

Thank you so much for the enlightenment. I actually thought I could skip first year loool.
