I Feel As Though My Life Is Over

I'm a sophmore in high school and I am taking H. Algebra 2 although I've never taken Algebra 1 because the school said I was advanced enough to skip it. And I was always a straight A student, rank 1 in my freshman class last year. But I on my first test of the year, I got a 75! I have a B- Average right now! I feel as though my life is over. My parents are very strict and they will be crushed if I get even a B+ in math. My teacher doesn't offer extra credit. The only thing I can do is teach a lesson on inequality word problems in class. I'm working so hard now. Why is sophmore year proving so difficult?

well skipping algebra 1 makes it tough. You learn a LOT of fundamentals in that class. Go for extra help whenver you can. Not just by yourself, but have someone help you

Exactly what Celebrian said. And, seriously, I promise, it's not the end of the world if you get one B+. Yes, your parents might be upset, but you know, school gets tougher as the years go on. They should realise you skipped a lot of fundamentals but you tried your hardest. That's all you can do. So, just relax. There is also no shame in dropping down into Algebra 1 if it just does not work out at all (I take this as a last resort though).

You're only a sophomore in high school, nothing is the end of the world yet. Bad grades happen, just learn from mistakes and improve.

OMG!! Go dig a grave and bury yourself now! Your life is worthless, there is no meaning in continuing.

j/k.

Really, relax. Its your first test. Learn from your failures. Turn your failures into a success. Go to barnes and nobles and buy "Learn Algebra 1 in 20 Minutes a Day". Read the book for a month and learn the basics. Its not that hard if your that advanced. Then you should be up to date with Algebra 2.

If its your only 75 then it shouldn't be a problem, you'll have more tests and if you can ace them they will all average out.

Let me know how it works out.

what u should really be worried about is being shunned from the CC community

don' t worry about it. you'll make it through. Tutoring really helps. get tutoring from calc students. I remember being really miserable during algebra 2 h sophomore year. My first test grade was a d. I got b both semester. my teacher wouldn't give extra credit or drop the lowest test. I was so ready to drop the honors class and go back to regular math, but i ended up making it all the way to calc bc. once you get past algebra 2, precalc will be a breeze. (imo algebra 2 and calc a was the hardest for me in hs) Its not the end of the world. good luck : ) I'm sure you'll be able to pull off a b.

"My parents are very strict and they will be crushed if I get even a B+ in math."

This is a much bigger issue than how you're doing in math. Worrying about your parents being upset about a B+ will destroy any love of learning that you might have. Trust me, your parents will still love you if you get a B. Accept that you might get a B. Then take action.
Go in for extra help from the teacher. Participate like crazy in class. Do extra practice problems and ask your teacher to go over them with you. You might even get an outside tutor. But don't look at this as doing it for the grade--do it for your foundation in math.
If you do get the B this term, chances are good that you'll pull it up by the last semester if you really work at it and really want to learn the material. You can do this. But don't make this abouit your parents.
That could be your downfall.

Thank you for all the advice. I feel a little better. My teacher lets us teach the class lessons for extra credit. Although I don't really understand the lesson, I'm going to study really hard this weekend so I can make a really good lesson plan for monday. If this works out, I guess I'll keep doing it. (Not the 75 part, the class teaching thing.)

^true true

I think starting from now, you have to let go of what you're parents are going to think of you.. I mean like, yeah have some fear but don't fear too much.. In junior year, you are going to be in heaps of stress from all your ECs and acadamics.. add in your parents, you are going to be crushed.
It's better to repair yourself now, before junior and senior year.

And umm B- is not a pretty thing but it's not all too bad.. You have plenty of time to raise it up! Get yourself a good tutor, do some practice papers, work on heaps of problems and you'll be fine. If it makes you feel better, I got Cs in freshman year.. haha

oh and I meant the 'true true' thing for ASAP's post

but Good luck for your lesson :)

You really shouldnt worry about grades. Just try your best and if your good enough it will work out but DONT DROP THE CLASS algebra 2 is hard at first but once you get the hang of it its pretty much repitition. If your parents give you trouble just scream at them a couple of times and they'll give you space. My parents dont even look at my report cards anymore

My parents are the same way about grades, and imagine how things were for me when I got Cs on two midterms, and several B semester grades in freshman and sophomore years! I had straight A+s in middle school, heh.

Now that I look back on it, I wish I could have cared more about school then like I do now. But it paid off, because now I'm getting high 90s and 100s like I was always capable of. No end of the world for you, just move on and do better.

Last year, i had a bad quarter in math. I got two 70s on tests or something close to that if i remember. Anyway, i studied my ass off for the next tests, got high 90s, and with a little extra credit, i pulled off an 89.6 (rounded to A-)! So if you do bad on one test, it dont matter so much. If you can pull off a 100 on two more tests, you should be in the 90s.

Maybe its so hard because you never took algebra 1. DUH!

i find it hilarious that so many people are saying "don't worry its not the end of the world". but when it comes time to answer the "chances" threads, everyone is like "omg that b+ is gonna kill you."

anyway, it really ISN'T the end of the world so chill out. just do that lesson thing and maybe try to take alg 1 somehow.

Thank you for the advice everyone (once again lol.) I'm a little more relaxed and planned my lesson. My teacher might drop the test grade since the entire class did so horribly on it. I was the third highest score. The entire class has to pass the next test tho... which is very iffy lol.

Don't worry about it too much because it is the first test. And trust me, Algebra 2 WILL get easier.

Also, if your grades are reported on a semester basis, then you also have second quarter put up your grades.

don't worry about a 75 on 1 test, your average will go up. Heck, I just received sub-50% grades on two AP Physics quizzes in a row, and I'm not that worried about my final grade. :)

yea i just got a 68 on my last ap calc test and i really dont care
