I feel defeated. Failing a math class for the first time.

Hi everyone,

I feel extremely defeated and hopeless. Math has never been my best subject— in fact, I know it’s my worst. I am currently a junior enrolled in the International Baccaleurate program at my school. These past few years have been a bit rough, I’ve transferred schools four times until last year. I’ve always been able to manage good grades in all classes including math until this year. The school I currently attend is extremely competitive and many of the kids I know in the program excell at math. I currently have A’s in all of my IB classes except for my math class which happens to be a non-IB class. I’m failing a regular class which is supposed to be “easier”. One of the factors that I feel contributes to my dilemma is the fact that my math class has roughly 30 students in it. It’s hard to get one-on-one time with the teacher. I’ve tried getting tutoring and I study, but I’m still not succeeding the way that I should be. I talked to my counselor about it and she informed me that the school doesn’t offer summer school to retake Trigonometry (the current math class I am taking). I may have to retake it again next year along with IB Math Studies which will have less students and a better teacher. I’m not sure what to do at this point and I know this will impact my college application. I’m succeeding in all of my other classes but I currently have an F in math. As for extracurriculars: I worked at a fast food restaurant at the beginning of this school year, volunteered at a hospital every other Sunday to discharge patients, I volunteer at an elementary school, and I serve as a class representive in the IB student council. I run my own small online business selling accessories and I created my own logo/do my own promoting. As of right now, I am helping to organize and set up a festival at my school. I have recently been inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society and regular NHS. The clubs I am currently in include: Alzheimer’s & Dementia Awareness Club, Diversity Club, Writer’s Guild, and KAST club (Kids Are Scientists Too - elementary school volunteering, I may have a role as Regional Manager or President next year).

With all of this in mind and my dilemma, what should I do? How heavily will this impact my college applications?

If you have any questions I will gladly answer them. I appreciate all of the advice I can get!

You might need to reduce ECs to have more time for math.
