So I just started my senior year in highschool(Mgmt. stream). My focus for Uni has always been um… uh…MIT (with a few other goods colleges and safeties.) So… readig their application info they say, and I quote, “Most US students apply to MIT at the beginning of their final year of high school, and international applicants should do the same.”
But the problem is most of the people I know applying to US did so AFTER finishing their 12th grade and if I start the application process now it appears I may apply nearly the same time as my seniors. So, this may be a really stupid question for someone who wants to get into MIT but can anyone clarify what should be the process for a Nepalese student? What should be my gameplan for this?
Thanks a lot!
So, how many of your fellow Nepalese are getting into unis like MIT and such with that gameplan?
I’m sorry mate but I asked this question to other Nepalese students who may have some experience with the admission process. I am pretty sure you aren’t one. I don’t know what you are even doing in this category.
I have no background with MIT. And I’m not from Nepal either, so feel free to disreguard my response as well.
But I would follow the recommendations on their website.
US kids send in applications in fall of their Senior year. Decisions are made between fall and winter (say, from October until February or March), and by May 1, deposits are in to the schools.
If you wait until school is over, you will have missed that opportunity… even if your school year happens to end at the end of December. (A shot in the dark here, but I have no idea when your school year starts/ends. Ours tend to start in August or September, and end in June.)
Most of the applicants from Nepal apply after finishing their high schools. MIT usually takes 1/2 applicants every year from Nepal. And I know a couple who got in. All of them have been student who took gap years. @JustOneDad No need to be condescending (I apologize if your question was genuine curiosity, but it sure doesn’t seem like it) . I myself am starting at a Top 20 university next year and I also took a gap year. In fact, I had no idea until I’d completed my high school that Nepalis could get into good colleges at all.
@loveyouall Don’t worry. @cauldroncastle is right. You can always take a year off, and apply. Most of the students I know here took a gap year. Do something productive in that year, and you’ll be fine. The application process would be the same. Ultra-brief overview - take SAT I (or ACT), SAT II (if needed), TOEFL, write application essay, fill out the application, and send. Also send CSS Profile (financial aid forms) if needed.
@loveyouall Although I agree with what has been mentioned above (you could take a gap year and start your process then), I don’t necessarily think that you have to be limited to taking a gap year. If you can manage your college application process (SAT’s, Subject Tests, IELTS/TOEFL etc) by the time you have to apply, November if you’re doing ED or by January for RD, then you can start it now. I know many people who start their entire process just a month before the deadline. So, I guess you could start doing the research, start studying for SAT’s (you can give them in October) and inquire about the entire process. It doesn’t matter if you’re applying the same time as your seniors! If you can get in this year, then you don’t have to take a gap year at all. And definitely keep up your school grades in the process too. Best of luck!
Yeah, if you know about the process, then, there’s no harm in trying both in your senior year and after taking a gap year.
Thanks for the apology.
I take it back.
