Hey, i'm a freshman at a NJ CC. I am majoring in engineering, and I want to get into some nice private school (Lehigh, Villanova, or Stevens). Anyhow, engineering is already hard, and I am involve in a bunch of clubs that literally take A LOT of hours of my time every week. These clubs are: Student government: senator, International club: Member, United Latino Organization: public relationships manager, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers): Vice-Presicent, IT committee: Students representative. They might not be a lot, but student government take tons of time, a lot of meetings, events, campaigns, drama, but at the same time very rewarding since it took me to conferences in Princeton, NYC, and 2 statewide summits in less then 1 year. So, is it worth put so much time in all this clubs to go where i wanna go? (i mean i could be using all this time improving my gpa or working)

^GPA is key to transfer, so you should drop anything you think is limiting your ability to perform at maximum potential academically.

^This. Drop anything you don’t have leadership in, and consider dropping everything but student government. Having a top GPA and one EC in which you’ve accomplished a lot will do a lot more to get you into a those schools than a mediocre GPA and a list of club names.

Invest in learning your courses well. Frankly, I don’t think your ECs are going to greatly influence transfer decisions at those schools as much as your demonstrated ability to handle the work. Transfer admissions are usually to replace students who have left. Furthermore, in engineering, that’s a pretty large number!

EC’s will be nice to fluff your profile but you don’t need to kill yourself over it. What’s important is keeping up your GPA and being productive in terms of your major (IEEE sounds good but research/internship would be nicer).
