So I'm currently a sophomore and last year and this year I kind of messed up with my grades. my GPA is like 2.7 and it's mainly my fault cause I kind of slacked off but that was before I started to actually take school seriously and started to look into colleges that I wanted to attend and their requirements but right now i'm waiting for my FCAT scores to come in because at my school you have to get at least a 4 on the FCAT to be able to take AP classes but I'm trying to take a mixture of AP classes and honors because Im really looking into going to The university of Miami,Florida state,or university of florida. So to finally get to the point I was wondering if I do really good my junior and senior years and possibly get like a 3.5 or higher and do really good on the ACT's and SAT's will that kind of make up for doing bad my Freeman and sophomore year???

And another thing do colleges really even pay attention to your previous years when you submit your transcript to them???

FL public colleges mainly pay attention to your class rank, cumulative GPA and test scores. For UF, I have heard top 5% is the magic number. I have heard UM admissions is very numbers driven also. Too bad you are just figuring all this out now, it is hard to dig yourself out of a whole like that. Best of luck to you!

First let me say that I am proud of you for taking ownership of your grades. You are in kind of a tough situation because most of your college apps will go out only including your cumulative stats through end of junior year and possibly 1st semester senior year. It is tough to dramatically increase your rank and GPA with only one year to do it. As an exercise you could take your 9th and 10th grade GPA and then factor in the best case scenario of a 4.0 (?) and see what you come up with. At the end of the school year ask your GC for your rank so you can do summer research on colleges. Please remember to include a couple of safety colleges in your final list.

On the positive side - colleges love to see an upward trend on GPA.
