I finally have a GPA!

It's a 3.558. The 558 is repeating. I wish these things got rounded :( I was expecting to do better in my poli sci class, but what's done is done.

Anyway, I go to a New Jersey community college (will get my associate's in math next spring) (it is to be hoped) and got a 1560 on the old SAT, and now I am pleased to finally be able to start applying to schools!

What should I add or subtract from this list?

BU
Pitt
Smith
Temple

I would prefer to be in or near a city, and I'm not entirely sure how Smith wormed its way onto my list, but that girl with the lip piercing on their website looks sassy, so I might as well apply.

With that SAT score, I would add more well-known schools.

I would consider NYU, BC, GW. You have several options.

yeah! definately! 3.5 is not spectacular but not bad either, also you have 1560... you should consider some top private schools where your SAT score will be weighted heavily. If I were in your shoes, I would go for JHU, Tufts and Georgetown. Even if they are slightly reach for your GPA I am sure you have chance with that SAT scores. Good luck.

Also some other LAs like Weselyan.

just so you know you're overqualified for Temple and depending on what you want to study at Pitt (I attend Pitt) you're a very qualified match

It's not a stringless 3.5, though -- I had to retake a class. Plus, my HS GPA was unfabulous (3.2-3.3 unweighted. I wonder if weighting GPAs has any use, outside of determining class rank). AND I went to community college after being miserable at a four-year school and doing poorly (2.3) there. I'm not sure my SAT will help too much, since I'm applying for junior standing :/

a 3.55 is not shabby...go for g'town, nyu, american (more of safety), GWU...those are all great schools with even better poli sci programs
you're high school GPA wont matter, and your SATs will also have little effect...im not sure if they'll look at your first college GPA, and if so, your chances for top schools drops way down

Your high school GPA will continue to matter for many of the schools people are suggesting (NYU, Gtown). Obviously they don't require high school transcripts for nothing! True, SATs hold less weight now, but a 1560 is an exceptional score that will raise eyebrows. Despite the picture College Confidential might paint, a student at a community college with a 1500+ SAT is a rarety. Your first college GPA WILL matter, by the way, since colleges evaluate your progress over time.

Anyway, I think you are right in your evaluation of yourself. Georgetown and NYU will likely be reaches just because of your somewhat rocky past that continued even after high school. The improvement at your new CC is great and may be enough to tip the scales in your favor, however, so definitely apply!

All of the schools you've listed in your initial post are going to be matches or safeties. Good luck!

HAY GUYS.

Okay, so I got my grade report in the mail and my overall GPA is a whopping .072 points higher than I expected (this would make it a 3.63) -- I didn't realize my poli sci class was only 3 credits, which is pleasing. Anyway, do you guys think adding Georgetown, NYU, and UChicago to my list is a bad idea (i.e. extremely likely to be a waste of application fees)? I applied to 12 schools when I was a senior in high school...four feels like I'm slacking, hahaha.

Whenever I ask for advice from the transfer counselors at my school, they're just like, "Just apply! You never know!" I know they're trying to be encouraging, but I'm sure it's possible to make some sort of educated guess! I'm totally uncertain about my choices, I'm basically using the numbers of applicants and accepted students from College Board's site to narrow things down. I got the impression from these boards that Wesleyan is relatively easy to transfer into, but collegeboard.com is giving me a 22% acceptance rate, which nervouses me, if you will.

Any thoughts?
