I FLUNKED My First Year Of Hs

I started my first year of high school in the fall and I was quite confident that I was going to do great. But, as the year progressed it was clear that wasn’t true. I can admit I was lazy and now my GPA is a 1.0 and I don’t know what to do. I know this may be a stretch but do you guys think it’s possible to get a cumulative Gpa of 4.0 by the end of junior year ? My school offers a lot of ap and honors classes.

Take it one step at a time. Focus on doing better next year and then you can go forward from there.

I am sorry, but no, you will not get to a 4.0 unweighted by end of junior year, not if you must average in your freshman year grades.

You will probably not be eligible to take all those AP and honors classes your school offers for another year or so. Our high school requires a B+ average to stay in an honors class or to level up to an AP the next year. Check your high school handbook for school specific rules and requirements.

I would take level-appropriate classes. Do your best in them. Develop a better work ethic. An upward trend in grades can look good too. You can’t afford to go all in on honors-level classes and have another year like the one you just had. As it is, if you can show that upward trend, you will be able to get in to 3,000+ colleges and universities. They won’t be ivy league level, but you will still get an excellent education.

Crush sophomore year, period. Full stop. Do not look ahead, do not plan for college.

Once you have a full, solid year in the books and a demonstrated performance level you might be able to talk your way into or out of whatever regulations bar your path, but nothing happens until you book a full year of real performance. Don’t be wishful, don’t pretend you don’t know what to do, just get to work. That means pay attention in class, take good notes, ask questions, do all the homework on the day it’s assigned, study the homework and quizzes you get back to see why you missed any questions and be sure to understand them before moving on.

There are a million tips for being an effective student, and most involve grinding out some work each day. Just stay on it. If that’s hard, treat it like a game and collect all the points, beat the puzzles, advance to the next level, but you still have to play every day. Good luck.

Sorry about this year. But you knew at some point things weren’t going well and it seems you didn’t do anything to improve.

You need to get with your counselor and teachers. If your parents can afford it get a tutor. Learn about effective learning strategies. Time management. You might want to get evaluated for a learning deficiency of some type. It’s rare that kids get a 1.0 just because.

Don’t worry about what your GPA will be. Learn how to make yourself better now. After that things will take care of themselves. Good luck.
