I go to Dartmouth - Ask away

I recently visited Dartmouth and really enjoyed it! One of my good friends go there, but I have no connections in there (not a legacy, etc., etc.) I have really good EC's (student council officer, District Lt. Governor for National Key club, sports etc., etc.) I have a 4.3 GPA, and take all honors I can and most APs.

However!!!! i did not take a social studies this year, rather doubling up on the sciences (physics honors and ap bio)....next year i would love to continue with AP physics C and AP chem, but would Dartmouth rather see an AP history my senior year since I haven't taken one yet? (...even though i love science!)

Physics is good at Dartmouth, so would they rather see me pursue something like that which I actually like? Or take a AP history just because? Thanks!

Dartmouth like every other college wants you to see something you're good at and sticking with it. Granted, it would like a well rounded candidate, it doesn't want to see you give up something of interest to you. Furthermore, schools like dartmouth always want some kids strong in the sciences (especially for our engineering sect)

I'm a govvy and econ major and i can tell u even in my major there are plenty of kids here that didnt take AP history etc

basically everybody's grades are somewhat the same when we are applying to esp. the ivies, I mean you can't really distinguish between an 89 and a 90, can you?? (although I know for a fact that 90 is somewhat like a "magic #" for many colleges.)

So Ejc2008, for you, you basically had something really really special (a company?) when you applied, am I correct? and along with a little side dish EC's like debate, sports, etc.

Anything else you could think of at the moment that could have affected/perfected your chances of being admitted by Dartmouth and the other ivies you mentioned?? Any national, international awards, or perhaps family legacy/alumnum relation?

How about Financial aids? I'm currently a HS junior, live in Vancouver Canada and am a canadian citizen. Does dartmouth offer need based financial assistance to canadians and other international students??

thanks a million for taking the time to help, nice day.

no legacy - i was pretty good at debate - there are TONS of canadians here and even if they dun give it to u officially dartmouth offer financial aid

if u need more help pm me but to be honest - im part asian so that coulda helped (not a lot of asians here)

Dartmouth is need blind to U.S citizens, U.S. permanent residents and citizens of Canada and Mexico. The admission candidacy of applicants who do not fall into either of the above categories(moat international students) considers both financial need and admissions criteria.

Financial aid is awarded based on demonstrated financial need rather than on merit, athletic ability, or special talents.
Dartmouth guarantees to meet 100% of each family's demonstrated financial need during the student's four years of undergraduate study.
Each family's need is re-assessed each year and the financial aid package is adjusted, as necessary, to assure that it is commensurate with demonstrated need.

what he said

It is not so much that Dartmouth is looking for a well rounded candidate as much as it is looking to build a well rounded class that is aligned with its institutional mission.

How easy is it to double major? I was interested in Philosophy/Econ.

How is the quality of teaching/facualty interaction, particulary in the philosophy department? Do you have the opprotunity for one of the "not at school term thing" to go to another college and take classes there for a semester?

How difficult is it to do debate for Dartmouth along with maintaining a GPA?

Thanks man. I went to DDI last year, and it was amazing. Fell in love.

Yeah you do

http://oracle-www.dartmouth.edu/ocp/prod/index.cfm

u mean parli debate?

u can go abroad // etc or u can do a term at another college not on the list and still get credit

its easy to double - lots of ppl do. Hell some triple major. As of last night - i am now a phil + gov major with econ minor :D cheers

How is the environment around Dartmouth? Do you like this school better than HS? What do colleges look at the most overall?

*** parli?
DDI is only policy
Dartmouth Debate Institute

oooo DDI i thougth u meant the actual dartmouth team

DDI's an awesome debate camp.

I love policy debate with a passion.

Merrr.

So you go to Dartmouth?

I wanna go to HYPS!

lol, jk. Actually my top three are princeton, rice(accepted), and MIT because i need a small school that is strong in math/science/art and Rice/Princeton are gorgeous...

Can you convince me to transfer to Dartmouth?

you shouldn't pick it if you need convinving. lol. Pick somewhere YOU want to go, not someplace everyone else 'convinces' you to go to.

Dartmouth might not be for you but Dartmouth's engineerign program and science are VERY strong ... hood museum and surround art internships are plentiful - we're small and have a tight community and teh campus is gorgeous

I probably would have applied to Dartmouth if I had the time. Taking 7IB/2AP classes with lots of EC's and other stuff ate up all my research and application time. There were lots of colleges that I wanted to visit, but never got the chance =/

Do you only recommend taking "honors" classes for your major? Or is it okay to do honors for other subjects?

how about government/law/international relations, those are my strong areas, and my dream job is to be a gov't policy maker.

umm u'd probbaly do govvy and public policy

or history and philosophy
