Is Dartmouth really your first choice?

I have noticed with the posting of the likely letter thread that a lot of new faces have shown up (Welcome to the family). I will admit that i am disappointed that none of the "regulars" that we have gotten to know over the past few months, and you know who you are haven't heard anything yet. I am still holding out for you.

However I am curious while you are happy for the moment that some of the pressure has been taken off because you are pretty much admits into the class of 09, is Dartmouth your first choice are you just holding out for what you think is something better? For those who have been deferred by HYP and are waiting them out, do you feel that you are settling with your Dartmouth admission? Is the Dartmouth admit an exciting knew opportunity to get to know hanover and the Dartmouth community? Hey you just may be pleasantly suprised.

I really love Dartmouth, and I would be extremely happy to go there. That being said, I am waiting (and hoping) for other colleges, including Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Dartmouth is one of my very top choices, but I'd like to have a selection of schools that are of Dartmouth's caliber. I think we make too big of a deal out of the distinction between HYPSM and other top colleges. At this level, you can't really do a hell of a lot "better". On this site (especially on the Harvard and Yale forums) there is a lot of quibbling about which of HYP is the best. I think the selectivity of HYP has been equated to its admits being considered a notch above everyone else, which is not necessarily the case. I also don't think colleges like Dartmouth, Williams, Amherst, and Swarthmore always get the name brand recognition that they deserve.

I am greatly looking forward to getting to know the Hanover community. However, I'm still waiting to see which doors will open for me, and I'm going to consider my choices carefully at that point.

Joey

Dartmouth is great, but . . . if I got in somewhere significantly higher ranked, i'd go the the higher ranked college. Call me a prestige whore, but its just what makes sense to me.

1st choice? I think that question is only appropriate for ED admits.

Everybody who applied RD obviously applied to other schools. Financial aid ultimately will figure in my decision...but I only applied to schools I'd LOVE to go to. Not one "safety" school in the group.

For me, Dartmouth is a dream school and I feel lucky to be accepted.

I love Dartmouth... too bad they rejected me ED :-.

Dartmouth is tied for my second choice, along with Georgetown. I didn't get a likely letter, though. :(

However, I would totally love to go to Dartmouth.

I was deferred from Princeton ED. My first choice is still Princeton. I got a likely letter yesterday from Dartmouth. It was exciting, as I know it is a great school. However, I do have some "issues" with it. That is, I applied to 11 schools and Dartmouth is my 8th choice right now. (So if I get into any of the seven schools above Dartmouth, I will go to those instead. My Order of preference is Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Brown, Swarthmore, Amherst, Dartmouth, Williams, Bowdoin, Wesleyan. I don't care anymore if Williams, Bowdoin, or Wesleyan admit me, because I would go to dartmouth over them.) The likely letter has not made me totally sweeten up to Dartmouth yet.

I've really been leading separate lives on several boards here on CC, acting as if each school is my first choice. About a month ago, I decided that "first choice" honors belonged to either D or W&L. About two weeks ago, I narrowed it down to just Dartmouth. I have minimal reservations about Dartmouth (other than the fact that I can't go to Dimensions even if I get in), which is something I can't say for any other school. It's really just perfect.

Hey Encomium,
Quick question: What are your reservations about Dartmouth?

Syb, hi :) the reason my face never showed up before is that I was very uncertain about my acceptance or prospects at any of the colleges I applied to among the ivies (Yale, Princeton and Cornell are also on my list) but the letter from Dartmouth gave me a new-found hope. So, tell me what you guys think
Sat1 :1330 (600m, 730v)
GPA > 4.0 weighted
Sen year classes: 5 AP's, 1 self-designed independant study (graphic design) for which myself and 3 classmates wrote a grant and secured 6,800 dollars from our district in order to buy computers (which kick large amounts of ass by the way)
Ec type things...
-Eagle scout
-Music: Principle Cellist in 2005 All-State Orchestra
-Athletics: 2004 Outdoor track Champion in the pole-vault, first team all-state in track
On this note i should add that Dartmouth's track coach has been in contact with me for a few months now, and calls roughly every other week to catch up on things, though he has never actually said that i am being recruited... really nice guy though
-ethnicity: cherokee, this may have provided me with a hook, because thankfully my family history has been very well documented and when Dartmouth sent me a confirmation letter for ethnicity i was able to provide them with some interesting facts about my family history (my great grandfather for instance was a senator in the cherokee nation as well as a sheriff in oklahoma)

As far as other things go, there are probably many other things which i am leaving out, but you can sort of get a general idea of my profile from the above.

slipper,

Basically I know it's a great school but I have 3 main concerns:

Drinking/Fraternities: I would do neither.

I'm not an outdoorsy person.

I'm not 100% convinced that the D Plan is not simply a way to get rid of say, 1/5 of the student body at a time to solve their housing issue.

Do you have any SAT IIs?

mattomatic,

Congratulations and welcome. I hope you stick around and that you go to dimensions have a great time. take it all in and hopefully go where you will be happy. Hopefully there will be more people from oklahoma :) (there is currently 1 in the class of 08)

Oh, I should mention that I'm not from oklahoma :p I'm from Delaware. :)

Sybbie719, you were one who got me started on Dartmouth, thank you sooooooooo much, I think I have found the perfect school for me. I love the atmosphere, the D-Plan, everything. Before Dartmouth, it seemed like every school I liked had some major flaw, but Dartmouth was perfect. Hopefully that is where I will be next fall!

GO BIG GREEN!!!!!!

What are your SAT IIs, just wondering? (mattomic)

Senior (getting old) moment ... You said your great grandfather was from oklahoma. A few more people are coming from delaware.

Well I got a letter and it's my first choice :)

Congrats to you. It's great when both things happen. Hope you will be a very happy 09.

I think that people are a little afraid of the remoteness of Hanover, but I think that it is that remoteness that contributes to the wonderful sense of community that happens at Dartmouth.

Yes, it seems to me that if you really loved a school you wouldn't want to go away for a semester. The only reason might be if it were Oxford or Cambridge, which are so famous that you can't turn them down,
