I got a bad ACT score as a freshman and I'm applying to college very soon.

I’m currently a sophomore that is graduating a year early from high school. I took the ACT as a freshman and I did not get my desired score.

ACT STATS - 25
Math- 30
English- 24
Reading- 23
Science- 24
Writing- 8

I know my ACT score is low for the schools I want to attend (Johns Hopkins or Northwestern) but I still want to apply. Is it worth my time?
I’ll also note that I am currently ranked 1/240 and my GPA is 3.8 UW/4.1W as of last semester. I’m in soccer and lacrosse, and I attended a program at Johns Hopkins last year.

I know it’s not much and my backup school is the University of Minnesota.

Have you taken the PSAT and SAT? Any APs? Are you in any leadership positions?

For a freshman, your ACT is awesome but you may want to consider taking either the SAT or ACT again and the PSAT (to try for NMS aid and prestige).

I think you should have a decent shot at these schools with some bumped up stats. Hopkins and Northwestern and hard though.

I took AP US history as a freshman and got a 4. I’m currently taking AP Stats and AP Bio, but I don’t expect to do well on the exams. Next year, I’ll be taking AP Calc, AP Physics, AP Human Geo, and maybe AP Environmental Science.

The thing is that I don’t know if I want to take the ACT again. I’m a bad test taker and I always second guess myself. I’m considering taking the SAT because it seems easier. I only say that because of the math portion.

You may want to look at test optional schools.

But why graduate early? Usually you would be unnecessarily be disadvantaging yourself by not having four years of course material and experiences. If you graduate on time there will be plenty of opportunities to prepare and retake the standardized tests.

I want to get out of my hometown as soon as possible. Also, I want to go off to college early so I can start my research project earlier with the necessary resources and guidance.
