Heya
I got a fee waiver to Rutgers but I have no clue why–I haven’t visited their college or anything. Can someone explain?
Some colleges give out fee waivers to encourage students to apply to their school.
It’s a marketing ploy to increase the number of applications (i.e. increase the denominator) to drive down the admit rate.
^^^That. Do not interpret it as “they must want me, so I will send in $80 and apply.” They do want your $80 and to be able to count you as another applicant. Apply if it is a school you would want to attend. Whether they want you as a student has nothing to do with the mailers and fee waivers you get from colleges.
A personal outreach is different - you would know if you got a personal letter from someone in admissions, Dean, etc.,they are really obvious as personal. Not the mass generated, but a truly personal letter or call. They are different but not so common to get. Fee waivers and mailers are sent out in mass by some schools.
But if you have a fee waiver, they just want you to apply.
If you are interested in the college go ahead and apply and save the $$!
@bopper – but that would also require getting test scores sent to this college in all likelihood. Not completely free.
OP: feel 100% fine to bypass it. It’s marketing noise.
It’s advertising…just because it is advertised doesn’t mean it isn’t a good idea for you.
Thanks all–I think I am going to apply. I know the admissions counselor pretty well, and I was already considering the school. Time to save that $$$ @bopper
