I got this fee waiver from Fordham, not because I needed it or asked for one, they just kept emailing and telling me about this fee waiver. I figured everyone from my school got one but I found out that's not the case. Is it random? Why do they give it to some students and not others?

They give fee waivers to those they want to encourage to apply.

There are a variety of reasons they might have for wanting to provide said encouragement, but that’s the bottom line.

Fee waivers are one method to increase interest in applicants. You’re obviously in a targeted group and the others aren’t.

In short, they like you better.

The more applications a college gets, the more selective they can be, and the better they look in the USN&WR rankings. In other words, you can consider yourself a potential tool in a marketing/PR campaign.
