Burn! And it's probably more communist than socialist, but I'll let it slide.

lol, I guess so.
I totally agree that there are people better at math than others, its just that I dont think its anything worth acknowledging. They were born better, so what? hierarchies only exist as much as we let them if you get what I'm saying.

So they should do math. If you're better at human-rightsing than I am, then that's what you should do. Hierarchies are useful for determing what people are good at, and therefore what they should do (rather important for socialism).

I'm sorry but I think this guy is a total liar. One essay of "passion" does not constitute an email. What does if you do something to show Columbia you really want to go there. My friend who also applied RD emailed the head of the program he was interested in and went to Columbia to meet with him and sit on the class. The head of the dept was soo impressed that he decided to write a letter to the admissions office about my friend. He is definitely going to get in there even though there are alot of other kids in our school with better grades and SAT scores then him because not only did he show interest but he took initiative. Also it helps he is a legacy kid but even without that Ivy League schools get soo many applicants that the ones that show the initiative are the ones who get in. They are the ones that are definitely going to matriculate and add to the class.

bounce, you should be a socialist dictator, so you can decide who should be what.

just kidding.

unless you acutally want to be, thats cool too.

what type of tool would lie about this? You havent even read my essay, so you cant really judge it. I had met the guy who read it when he came to our school, introduced myself, and was very outspoken when time to ask questions came. I made sure he knew who I was so when he read my essay, he definitely matched a face to a name.

But why would I come on here and lie? that makes no sense.

b/c u are one of those kids who are soo insecure about themselves that they have to show alot of bravado to appease their ego. What's the matter buddy got a napoleon complex? I really hope my friend Allen gets in just to prove that the people who want it the most get in! legacy of columbia unite!

if your talking about a napoleon dynamite complex then perhaps - If you wanted to know that I can do the entire dance routine from the movie, well I can.

Im not insecure about myself at all. That would truly make me a tool. I was just wondering if anyone else got an email, and no one has.

don't be jealous! j/k

hmm jealous, uhuh you keep thinking that, even though every factor matters in admissions legacy is still considered buddy. Legacy is the type of thing that pushes a candidate over if their stuff is in the ball park, I got the ball park lao mao zi!

being a legacy should not matter at all. we might as well start primogeniture!

what? whats your issue man?

and just because I didnt suck up to the head of a department doesnt mean I dont want it. You are one of those kids who just really wants to go to New York - you dont actually care which school. Columbia is one of the very few schools that actually has what I want. Dont tell me about "who wants it the most". Usually, columbia hates the kids who call them up all the time and submit extra things. They want casual people who dont seem anal about everything.

thats completely untrue b/c if they wanted jack of all trades then they wouldn't ask for a major in hte beginning. What do you think a major is? Its being anal over a certain subject. Number 1 he didn';t call them up all the time, he did it once. asked questions about the dept and was invited to sit in on a class, he also got a meeting with the head that isn't being anal or a suckup. That's show initiative or does that not register. You might "want" it but you didn't go the extra mile now did you...no you didn't soo sorry.

Bouncetotheizzo- you need to learn some humillity and not be so judgemental. When I mentioned my D wants to be a lawyer, you made so many assumptions, it was funny. How do you know where she is going to work? You ASSUMED things about her. You admitted it, but then you still passed judgement. I am guessing you would not want people to pass judgement on you.

You need to learn that there are people who have been lucky in their life circumstances, who realize that and are making a difference in the world. No, not everyone has walked in your shoes, but you appear to believe if they haven't they have no compassion or are some how not as special.

You are gay. Do you think only gay people stand up for gays? That only poor stand up for the poor?

Take a humble pill!!!

I'd just like to say kudos to Bouncetotheizzo for being a breath of fresh air on these forums. It's nice to see that you have found your true passion in life and I believe that you just might be the type of person Columbia is looking for.

that's not what I beleive at all city! Even I've been "lucky". I am only the way I am because of my circumstances - this is luck. I don't think I'm special - I said that before. I'm just lucky.

Yes, I passed judgment on your daughter, but it really shouldn't be so insulting. I wouldn't do it in a personal setting, but this is an online messageboard so more things slide. Plus, you didn't even refute what I said. Why wouldn't your daughter go and help kids who actually need the help? (maybe she is, I don't know, but the best assumption I can make is that she'll be helping kids in the US.)

I know that not only gays and poor people stand up.(It's actually very rarely the latter). Please don't think I'm saying all this in a negative tone. I dont mean to speak down on anyone (lol I dont beleive in hierarchies, right?)

haha city called you gay. sodomites are funny.

: - ?

"They want casual people who dont seem anal about everything."

Amazing, not only did you write one killer essay (insert sarcasm where you see fit), but you also have the revolutionary (see above) ability to know exactly what the adcoms want. I could blast every other post that you have written. You start off with some hypocrisy and then move into judging mathematicians?

By the way, "Why use a fifty cent word when a five cent word costs a nickle?" is quite an interesting comparison for someone who claims to be a socialist and hates Adam Smith. Then again, the point I just made may be way over your head.

bounce..i love your passion..and im into all of that too..my aff this year is all about sudan and political activism and yes human rights is the most important thing in the world but u failed to realize that only being an activist doesnt get you anywhere..ppl just brush you off as simply an activist that talks to much but its being a lawyer or some profession that can get your voice heard..I wanna be a doctor but at the same time i want to be involved in health care reform because i realize only being an activist wont get me anywhere..i wont have any credit..anyway..i love your passion but you cant brush off others...and also if you really care about human rights..you have to realize you cant help humans if you dont have money..MONEY is what these people need ..so you have to make money first and just use it the right way!..btw i read a great essay about a mathematician/dreamer and i thought it was great..and different..and everyone wrote about ourselves..i think out of all applicants..its mostly the columbia applicants who chose to pick a unique part of themselves to write about..nothing to do with what their application already consist of..

bounce its also cool that u want to save the world..but guess what CITY's daughter wanting to save lives of children in the US isnt a bad thing because i dont know where you live but there are 860,000 kids alone in nyc who are freaking poor and suffering..soo dont immediately act like helping a kid in US doesnt mean anything...for one who believes in human rights..its quite awkward that you assign different values to different lives around the world..understand..it doesnt matter whose life your saving as long as your saving lives...everyone's value is infinite....period..i think if anything you completely otherize people..i think you're pretty ignorant to the situation in america...and i dont think you've come to terms with reality yet..i was just like you..but the thing is i realized I CANT SAVE THE WORLD SO I BETTER NOT LOOK DOWN ON PEOPLE WHO DONT HAVE THE SAME PLANS AS ME FOR SAVING THE WORLD..I just find it quite strange that you put yourself above someone else because they might be helping ppl within the US..human rights is really important but u can start in america..i mean for example i volunteer in the children defense fund and ive learned soo much about my own city..and u can do the same..

btw im a huge gay rights activist..and i think coming out especially writing about it in an essay is a big deal and i really do respect you for it..
