I got accepted into Stanford but not Johns Hopkins!

I found it quite interesting that Stanford accepted me but Johns Hopkins wait-listed me. Isn't Stanford harder to get into? For Johns Hopkins and Stanford, I put biology as my major. So did this happen to anyone else?

I'm sad I didn't get into Johns Hopkins. Which school is better though?

Well, certainly most people would say Stanford is a bit more prestigious. Though, for biology, it's a tough call.

for bio? pfff, JHU is beast. But Stanford is a great school overall (the closest thing to harvard that the west can get). Gl and hf.

At this level it pretty much comes down to what each school is looking for. Stanford needed students just like you this year and Johns Hopkins apparently did not. Johns Hopkins has undoubtedly one of the best undergraduate programs in the physical/natural sciences in the world. Congrats on Stanford and good luck with the Waitlist at Johns Hopkins should you choose to stay on.

s accepted at Berkeley & Middlebury, but waitlisted at JHU..surprised to say the least..now waiting for some ivies..

I got accepted into the University of Chicago (#10 in country) but got waitlisted by JH (#13)...

I gotta say: JHU, Duke, and Northwestern have admissions results this year that seem more like ivy/tippy top college results. I mean...maybe Duke is understandable since it's ranked above many of the Ivies...but I was surprised by JHU and Northwestern. College decisions seem to be getting far more holistic and JHU isn't just accepting valeds with high SATs (which may be good news for me lol). Gratz to all accepted btw!

Hmm well, I think I am a unique applicant.

I was waitlisted at UChicago and Duke and rejected at Northwestern and Stanford.

I was however accepted to Johns Hopkins University.

My GPA is very low, around 3.5 unweighted, and my SAT is 2270. Everything else is pretty typical.

To andtarskies:
Right...because US news rank is indicative of selectivity? Chicago HAS to be more selective than Dartmouth because its ranked higher right? And Penn is more selective than MIT too? Thank god you aren't coming here. It is absolutely amazing how many arrogant applicants there are in here. I'm happy for those who are both happy at getting in and understanding of the magnitude of getting in here. I'm also happy JHU all of a sudden decided to get more selective and slam the door to those who don't deserve an acceptance by virtue of their personality.

Chicago doesn't look for the same things as JHU. If you're judging by rankings, there's hardly a difference between 10 and 13 anyway.

imathriver: JHU clearly loved you! I guess it's not all about the numbers after all. Something you did must have really stood out during the grueling review process. I've seen so many students who were WL'd at Hopkins who were admitted to Chicago/Northwestern and even Stanford. Congrats!

To Blah2009: I find that your comment was downright mean. I wrote my comment to show that there is really no way to determine what schools you will get into. I am aware that all of the schools you mentioned are great, and I'm sure you can find tons of people who are in like situations (see thread title).

I am not arrogant and I am not naive. Both JHU and UChi were reach schools for me and I'm happy just to be waitlisted at JHU. So I would be much obliged if you would not rip on my character. Thank you.

Blah2009: what the heck. You are inferring a lot from a one sentence. Why can't you just accept andtarskies' situation and leave out the side comments? It would be like me saying that hot-headed people like you start wars (which is obviously not true). Why don't you learn some online etiquette from concretejungle and see how he handled it? If JH judged their applicants by personality, I wonder how you got in. Thank god I'm waitlisted, cuz I don't have to deal with people like you. Now this doesn't sound too nice, does it?

I was also, in my opinion, unexpectedly waitlisted at JHU. I received a likely letter from Duke back in February and have been accepted to several schools in the same league as JHU, so the decision struck me as a bit bizarre, especially since I thought I nailed the interview. I guess this just shows how competitive college admissions has become - it is truly a honor to be approved by multiple schools, even non-Ivies.

Blah2009: It looks like you're not a very nice person judging by your previous posts. Perhaps you are the arrogant one here and should stop being a hypocrite.

I think everyone can agree that rankings don't determine who gets in and who doesn't especially when the differences between the top schools are so marginal. Cool - done. Now we can keep this thread on topic.

OP: you shouldn't be sad at all. Be happy about your acceptance to Stanford, which is much better than JHU anyway. It is weird, I agree, that you didn't get into Hopkins while getting into Stanford, but this makes your college selection even easier in choosing Stanford.

^I don't think Stanford is better for pre-med

lol, depending on what ur majoring, dont bother in comparing universities please lol... stanford is great and so is JHU... if u wanna work with research and have med school opportunity JHU is the best for spicin up med school apps... stanford is just like MIT in which if ur great with math/mechanics/ and wanna help the world through that aspect go to stanford... theres no shame in being rejected or accepted to either schools...

JHU screens people who apply to med school so I would say that JHU is NOT the best for getting into Med school.

but in terms of preparation, JHU is quite the school to help u get goal oriented and take up medical oriented projects... comparing apps, there are more acceptances to med schools across the country from JHU then there is stanford... even if they screen, one is not limited to necessarily applying only to JHU, but other med schools as well... take that into consideration...
