I got caught cheating. What should I do?

I'm surprised this won't go on your transcript, but if it doesn't, how will colleges know about it? Just curious. Good job with the confession. You really blew it briefly, but made the best possible partial recovery under the circumstances.

Good on you, In Denial. Just be honest while writing about it to colleges. They'll see you have a decent heart and a sense of integrity. No one is invulnerable to pressure and temptation. But then again, what do you mean it won't go on your transcript?

if you havent confessed yet, i suggest that you dont. in my experience, administration can't really do anything without that confession.

Ehh, but do you really want to sever every single tie to the teacher who thought so highly of you?

Alex

how did the teacher know changed ur grade?

I know this doesn't help at all, but why didn't you just lower the grades of your competition a bit? >_<

If it were me, I would try to play it off. I wouldn't have the guts to fess up and let everything go. Actually, I wouldn't have the guts to do something like that in the first place.

Sorry that happened, but take this as a lesson for the future -- don't cheat.

It kind of scares me that people would advocate lying. For a site that basically caters to the super competitive, I have to wonder to what lengths people here would go to in order to stay on top. Kind of sickening.

Agreed, totally! Kids today are so pressured, they go to extraordinary lengths to make themselves feel good, as seen in this thread. I know people that have cheated, changed grades, and have had old tests for the past 4 years and are going to Stanford. I also know people who have worked their butts off and are going to community colleges. It IS sickening.

What kind of teacher leaves the grading open while they leave a student in the room alone.
Maybe she already suspected you of cheating and wanted to test you.

In Denial.... You are tops in my book for admitting your wrong and not trying to bamboozle the teacher. I have been horribly discouraged with the outcome of a cheating incident at D's high school (one was an SAT cheat who was reviewed by college board and then bragged to classmates how they couldn't justify refuting his 400 point jump). Several others were caught and disciplined with an out of school suspension but still kept their admit to our top rated flagship U after writing an explanation.

Your willingness to honor your relationship with your teacher is important. I am happy you saw that. Our relationships with others are priceless; admission to a top 10 school is a momentary glitter in the scheme of things. You will be okay. Stay on the path, it will lead you where you need to be (and with your integrity intact).

Well, I'm glad it worked out for you...

you guys are missing the biggest scandal in this entire thread!!!
THE OP MADE AN ALTERNATE USERNAME!!! this is against the rules of CC! why are you guys worried about some high school business when the OP did something FAR more serious???

(just to clarify, i'm only joking around because the OP posted that his/her life isn't ruined and he/she did the right thing)

...just wondering, what did your parents have to say about the situation?

LOLOLOLOL omggggg MBP you're freaking hilarious... made my day (:

yeah if the suspension doesn't go on your record, ...how would colleges know?

besides i really am curious if you are someone who I am familiar with on CC :D

The alternate CC name might mess up your chances with colleges though, do you know that their are millions of Admissions people from real colleges are on this board at this very moment?

"...just wondering, what did your parents have to say about the situation?"

yeah i know dude

alternate usernames is pretty serious isht

good luck man

Why did you change an 88? 88% is still a good grade, especially if the class is hard. But anyways, I would talk to your teacher and just be honest about your motivations behind changing the grade. I think any teacher would understand how cutthroat GPA and class rankings can be. So just talk to him or her, and show that you're really sorry about it.

Lols, nevermind. I didn't realize that you had already done that...

First of all, I don't even think CC enforces the policy of one username. In fact, I've been here long enough to know that there is a lot people how have multiple accounts. Nice try, MBP.

Okay, answering all of your questions.

My parents are pretty much disappointed at me. I let them down. And it will take a long time to regain back their trust. They didn't ground me or whip me or anything. Just disappointed and that too me hurts so much more.

My teacher is very trusting of everyone and always leave her computer unlocked. It was unfortunate that she left the room with me all alone. I was tempted. What is sadder is that my grade was 88%, a decent grade. In face, the class in question happens to be the easiest class I have (in terms of rigor).

Lastly, the vice principal was vague when he explained "it won't appear on your transcript." I will double check with my counselor. I really don't want to check the box at the common app saying: "Have you ever been suspended? If yes, please explain."

they enforce the 2 username policy :)
