I got into Harvard--but I'm not going!

hi all...

this is my very first thread.

How many of you CC-er's out there were accepted but aren't going? This is so that all of us waitlisted unfortunates can gauge what the chances of getting in through the waitlist are. (I'm really hoping that their yield is lower than the predicted 70%. ha like there's a chance of that happening...)

Where are you going?

lol everyone always says this before they get all their college acceptances...like first choice MIT, second choice Harvard...and when they DO get accepted to every college, they all end up choosing harvard ;)

um... I was waitlisted, and I'm just seeing how many ppl on CC (where the largest number of H admits would be found) would pass up Harvard for somewhere else.

Im going! :D

i dont know. yale was always my number 1 but i'll take a look at harvard. i really like davidson too

I was accepted to Harvard, but I will most likely not be attending.

Derailler,

Why? do you have another first choice?

Yes. I really love Stanford, and that has always been my top choice. If for some reason Stanford doesn't work out, my next choice is MIT or Yale.

Also my sister goes to Harvard. She (along with her roommates) says Harvard's not all that it's cracked up to be. But I'm not basing my decision on that. I just absolutely love Stanford...and it'll be a change of pace. I've lived on the east coast all my life. I want to experience something different the next four years.

at the moment, i'm thinking yale, but heck...it's harvard. you never know.

Go with your heart. And it's not like Yale and Stanford are the pits, you know!

same here, I got into Harvard but i'm thinking Oxford instead. they have a better medical program... well that's good for the people who are waitlisted :)

I got in and I'm not going either. I'm set on Yale and happy with my decision. It is amazing though, that even with all of the terrible things that I had heard about student happiness and the non-undergrad focus at Harvard, I was still considering Harvard as my 2nd choice simply because it's Harvard.

You get that feeling that people uneducated about the whole process and the schools themselves will say "why the %$$@ did you turn down HARVARD?" But I have good reasons.

Well, phurley, I must say that Harvard DOES focus on its undergrads so much. Students are happy here -- sometimes, I feel that Harvard students just complain too much about little things. Overall, I am very happy with my time here, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Yale is a great school, but I just wanted to correct some of the misconceptions that you stated in your post about the big H. I just simply don't find it to be true.

I got into Princeton and Harvard, but I'm not sure if I want to go to either of them =X...

"non-undergrad focus at Harvard"

Have you heard this from actual students who have gotten undergrad and grad degrees at Harvard? There were over 200 double-Harvards in the law school alone when I was there, and I knew dozens of them. I have not met ONE person who did both who feels that the "focus" (whatever that means) is anywhere but the College. The College is the oldest, largest, and richest school at Harvard. It's the heart and soul of the university. If I had only been able to do one of my two degrees at Harvard, I'd pick undergrad in a heartbeat.

If I were going to base a major life decision on the opinions of other people, I'd seek out the most well-informed people I could.

All of those considering Harvard vs. Yale should be aware of this, if they aren't already.

I second Hanna's comments. Harvard College is probably the most important school at Harvard. As for the graduate schools, from my experience, professors expect the grad students to be extremely independent. That is why I'm confused as to what everyone here means by undergrads not "getting attention" or "focus". Harvard professors don't have less time for undergrads than any other top research university.

I'm pretty sure that I'll be turning down harvard for princeton. I'm from NJ and Princeton has been my number 1 for some time now. The fact that they gave me a grant that covers all but $350 is also playing a huge role in my decision. I can totally agree with phurley93 about being asked why I'm turning down Harvard. That did play with my mind for a little. But I have my reasons as well.....

know a girl who turned down harvard and princeton for umich. no money or anything involved either.
