I got raped by the AP English MC

The MC was a friggin beast. No joke.

The essays were pretty straight-forward, easy, no big deal.

But those multiple choice question.... omg...

yep the MC was not very nice, but i did feel much better about it than my essays

I had heard that the exam was going to be similar to the writing section of the SAT - finding sentence errors, grammar stuff. I got a real shock today!

We almost had to test in an auditorium where the are no desks to write on. Lucky not however.

anyone wnat to im me to chat about it.. but of course while abiding by the rules of CB my aim is xonicole143ox and my msn is nicoleg621@aol.com

I wish it was like the writing section of the SAT, cornerstones...

are you really deducted a lot of points if you dont include ANY examples in your essay? i usually write very good essays (worst i've ever gotten is a 7 in class and my teacher is an AP grader) but i usually include examples in my essays, but on the third essay on the test, I was short on time and just kept writing and writing and when i was finished, i realized i didn't have any examples at all but I did think that what i wrote was very good, most likely was an 8-9 range paper had i turned it in english class =/

also, the last passage on the multiple choice was incredibly difficult, but I remember for like the first five questions I got a diagonal on my answer sheet (either ABCDE or EDCBA)

lol, i remebr the diagonal :). I qualified the third easy; used 2 positive examples and two negative ones.

The MC was easier than expected. I think I did well. Hopefully a 4 on that, if not a 5.

The essays were a total mess.

What did you guys write for the flamingo one? I basically said that the author thought that American culture was fun-loving and hedonistic, but shallow and extravagant when there is poverty, or something along those lines.

passage 1 = america is obsessed with wealth and the continual desire to obtain more wealth, especially material goods. thus, the pink flamingoes are assocated with wealth so everybody wants them. something along those lines... basically the theme was wealth

crap. I missed that.

I mentioned something about conformity as well. But basically I said that American culture was opulent and shallow.

I put how the author used a historical allusion in order to describe the flamingo as a "red phoenix." I said the phoenix represents America because it was a rebirth and a new beginning; the 50s was the era of Civil Rights.

but how does the civil rights have anything to do with american culture? and what about the first ~3 paragraphs of the essay?

Yeah I dont know about that... the images presented consumerism and maybe conformity thats about it imo.

Also about the 2nd essay Hazlitt wrote that one no? He was a socialist.. an early form.. proto-socialist doesnt that mean it could be a satire?

same question, is the second essay satire? i basically approached it with that thought in mind.

Well I don't get yalls notion that there can only be one answer. How does Civil Rights era have anything with the American culture in the 1950s? Everything, or so I've been taught in my history class. I don't know how they'll grade, but I don't think they'll be hypercritical, especially since it isn't a falsehood. I thought it was creative. :-</p>

Ok, I found the MC to be qutie easy, but I didn't budget my time well on the MC so I completely left out the 3rd passage (which I heard afterward was the easiest one). I'm pretty confident I got virtually every answer right (of the other three passages).

1st essay: Decent, probably a 6 or 7. I was a little nervous at the beginning considering the amount of writing that was ahead! I think I was a little repetitive which may be a sign of weakness, but I analyzed it pretty well.

2nd essay: Many people found it the hardest, but I didn't. I'll admit, I did (consciously) plan to discuss syntax in my essay but I went into so much depth with my other devices that I just didn't get around to it. I did make rather strong cases for parallel sentence structure, abstract diction, and use of examples. I think this could be a possible 8 or 9.

3rd Essay: I loved it! In fact, I had read an article in the US News and World Report that talked about that very subject (with an emphasis on blogging). I had a lot to say. Even though I didn't budget my time well throughout the essay section, I wasn't worried b/c I knew I'd write this essay w/o a problem (even in less than 40 minutes). This could be a possible 8 or 9 (I'm leaning more towards a 9).

Overall, I'm glad b/c I wrote COMPLETE essays (intro through conclusion) on all three of them.

I also tried calculating my scenario and have come up w/ a low 5 every time. It's possible that I can get an extremely high 4 though. (...I should have used my time better on the multiple choice!) Oh well... a 4 or 5 would be great! It doesn't even matter, b/c I don't get credit at Princeton for AP Eng. Comp. anyway!

Good luck to you all!! :)

-Jon ;)

also for the third one, how did people write it/what examples did you use?

for the examples I didn't really use any...

I basically cited the first amendment and how the country was built on freedom of speech. Then I said how ordinary people's opinions can be valuable like at town hall meetings and such. Argh.
