So here’s my situation: Out of my whole freshman year I got one B, and now I’m in my first semester of sophomore year and going to get three Bs. My next semester will probably improve, as my French grade dropping to a B was mostly due to bad luck and not any incompetence in the subject (I was going through a rough time at home, forgot about part of a project, and my teacher doesn’t accept any late work). I’m not expecting any more luck in chemistry or math analysis however, but there could be hope. I’m in pre-IB and going into the IB program next year, where grades tend to drop so there’s that to factor in as well.
I do have a good amount of extra curriculars, I participate in french club, sister cities club, drama club, Girl Up, and I plan to bring back my schools newspaper club that I was a part of freshman year next year. I also joined a club at the YMCA this year called “Leaders Club” where I must get 100 volunteer hours each year. My classes are all honors and I got As in both of my two AP classes.
Can I redeem myself enough to get into Columbia? Should I be worried about getting into schools like UVA or NYU (because I’m currently not)? I’m a first generation and poor (my mom makes somewhere around $20,000 and my dad has no custody at all) does that help my admissions at all?
