Works for me!

its kind of funny where this is going... it would make an excellent analysis paper: AA vs. India's Public Education Values

but the interesting part is that in india it affects public education while in america it affects private education

My nephew had 1600 SAT1 and 1560 SAT2 and was denied to all the ivy league schools and MIT. GPA 4.25.
He was lucky to get accepted only to only one(!) school (and it was not the best program either)
and yes, he is white...

though i didnt read all the posts in this thread, i know a girl who got accepted to Boston College...with a 1000 on SAT. shes hispanic. she is #13 in her class at an anything but competitive HS (if i went there i would be #1 by far). meanwhile, kids with 1350+ sat scores and higher gpa's are getting flat out rejected.

plus she got 30k in aid.

doesnt seem fair at all to me.

Where did you hear this?

^ Its pretty common knowledge. Harvard Educational Review came out with a study that showed it.

New Study Shows that Racial Bias Might Still Infect the SAT:

In recent years obvious culturally biased questions have been purged from the Scholastic Assessment Test. But a new study published in the Santa Clara Law Review shows that questions which don't appear to be biased on their face, yet still have a huge racial disparity in the percentage of students who answer correctly, continue to find their way onto the test. On the other hand, the study shows that questions on sample tests that for some unknown reason tend to favor blacks are always eliminated from the actual SAT.

According to the report, every one of the 138 questions included on the October 1998 SAT favored white test takers. By this the authors mean that a higher percentage of white students than black students answered correctly on every question that appeared on the test. More than one sixth of the test questions had racial disparities in correct response rates of 20 percentage points or more. The authors believe that this preference for questions that are skewed toward white test takers has existed on the SAT for at least the past decade.

It appears that when test administrators at the Educational Testing Service develop a question used on sample SATs on which the results show that blacks do comparatively well in relation to whites, ETS concludes that there must be something wrong with the question. Because blacks historically don't perform as well on the SAT as whites, ETS concludes that any question which breaks this pattern must be flawed. But sample questions on which whites outperform blacks by a large margin are considered appropriate. Therefore, the test makers seem to perpetuate the racial scoring gap on the SAT by the questions they choose to place on the test and by the questions they choose not to include.

i'm happy to see that senior members are not keeping track of such a stupid thread. I can tell you myself I blamed rejectance of a high school because of a quota (10% asian 15%other and 25% black 25% white 25% hispanic) I can say I despised blacks in school for a while. The fact remains however that during my freshmen year, going to a schoool with a single majority in religion and ethnicity I received comments like "sand nigger" and was extensively bullied on. Diversity is integrated by even the most disciplines, the military, that's the first place it hits, why? Because the change of thought is needed, you need to learn about other cultures and aspects.
I have seen blacks and hispanics who are top students are my school being rejected from many schools. I have seen the same people succeed in college like no ther. On the other hand one may argue that blacks get into college easily when compared to others; this may be true, however you have to view some statistics. Living next to Newark I know a fact, experiencing it myself as I grew up, being non-white, and ESPECIALLY black will never mean you are the same as your white teacher. This is so sad when we try to preach equality. All in all i won't be returning to this thread but know this, the system is flawed, but it is the best system out there, without a doubt. I can say from experience that you will never know the beauty of diversity until you see the hell of not having it. Stupid generalizations of blacks hispanics and other minorities leave a negative image; if you know a smart black kid, its because he's cheating or some other lame excuse. I was rejected, tormented, beat upon, and failed to reach my goals everytime. Rejectance is the saddest thing, but its unique in the sense it is the greatest victory of failures. If you don't get into a college, suck it up, no need to blame it on race..... EVER.

it all has to do with history some ethnicites were opressed for a large time and cycles of violence and other malefactors come down from generation to generation, obviously existing today. i mean i have worked with some kids whose dad or mom has abandoned them, i know other kids minority and whites who don't have a roof over there house; hell if i didn't have a roof over my house, or i had people "shooting up" in the elevator, do you really think i would give a damn about english homework?

you do realize that other white people with lower stats than those get into ivy-leagues? your newphew obvisouly lacked something, it's not that he's white. stop blaming your rejections on AA.

Yeah...this thread is lacking the maturity of other Affirmative Action threads.

Just so you all know...I'm graduating with a 3.85....33 ACt (rougly a 1470-1500 on the old SAT), I've been recognized on the national level for music composition, I've completed 1200 hours of community service in high school, and I'm the top leader in virtually everything I do..including being a candidate for Youth Governor of the State Of Illinois. Last but not least, I'm black...how did I do??

Harvard: NO...Yale: NO...P-ton: NO...Dartmouth : Yes (likely)...Cornell: Yes (likely)...WashU: Yes (likely)...JHU:Yes...Umichigan: Yes.

So AA ain't all that its cracked up to be. According to you all, HYP would be falling all over themselves for me...when in fact they weren't. If you get rejected, just let it go, and appreciate whichever college you go to. Trust me, it ain't because of the 5-7% of elite college students who are black.

As usual the #1 argument of AA-proponents is to accuse whomever that is anti-AA of being bitter over college rejections. Again, debate on the merits of AA not of the poster.

That's like me asking who on this thread is a URM and then automatically disregarding their opinion.

I dont think you guys understand the stigma that comes with being black. When I first moved to my new school they put me, number 3 in middle school, in all regular classes and a year back from my classmates just because I didnt look smart enough. I had to kill myself for 4 years just to catch up. I get laughed at by the black kids for trying to hard and I get put down by the white and asain kids who just think im stupider. This mental bearing followed me for 4 years and i would just break down and cry while doing hw because nobody wanted to see me succeed except me. Now when I finally can see the fruits of my labor when I got into my schools all I met with is more resentment and bitterness. I know my classmates always say "he didnt deserve to get into yale or stanford. he is so stupid and just got in cause hes black. hes doesnt even act black." thats what they think of me and it hurts and the black people dont think much better of the "rich" kid who thinks he is better than everyone else. My whole high school experience has been a mixture of pain and depression just because of my race. I am a guy yet i forced myself to become anorexic just to get my mind off what people think of me. It hurts to say this but you guys need to know what you do to people when you discredit them and say they dont deserve it. believe me, i certainly deserve it but no will ever figure that out and that is just sad.

"College Board threw out verbal logic SAT questions that Blacks did better than Whites in."

Intresting...

Stan, guess what? If there were no AA, nobody would be questioning your acceptances. People want to act like AA only affects those white kids who "whine" about losing their spots to URMs, but an even more insidious aspect is that it compromises the accomplishments of URMs who earned their place legitimately. So when someone doesn't take your acceptance seriously and doesn't respect your accomplishments, you can thank the kids who made fun of you for "working so hard" and then come college decision time want to get in the easy way.

dont worry about it dude
Its just college
Steven's skin color will serve him well in the job market

But stan. Being an URM helps a lot in the admissions. It is inherently unfair. I think It should be based on merit and merit alone

Stanmaster22: Don't you think the accusations of you not being qualified comes out of affirmative action? The fact is many URMs are qualified but they will always face this "stigma" as long as AA exists.

Edit: Flavius beat me to the punch.

you do realize that other white people with lower stats than those get into ivy-leagues? your newphew obvisouly lacked something, it's not that he's white. stop blaming your rejections on AA.

while i reailze your point, i also rezlize that there is NO black person with such credentials that would not have been admitted (SAT1 1600, SAT2 1560) to all the ivy league schools and MIT.
there might not be a black person with such credential either.... (i do not know for sure)

"there might not be a black person with such credential either...."

That's not very nice.
