I’m about to start my second year of college and I’m dreading it. I switched to an English major half way through freshman year because even though the field doesn’t make a lot of money I thought I would be happier. Well, I’m not. I live at home and live far away from the school because I can’t afford to move out. I only take classes Tuesday and Thursday because driving that far 5 days a week is a joke. All of my friends are at other colleges and are having the time of their lives. Meanwhile, I have tried and failed to make friends and join clubs at my school. Sadly, this is almost impossible with how far I live from the school. Overall however, I just feel dissatisfied with the school.
Anyway, the point is that I have no money to transfer colleges, move out, etc. I’ve considered dropping out dozens of times but my family and friends wouldn’t support the decision. I guess I’m just looking for ideas that other people might have. Or maybe someone else has been in a similar position. I’ve heard the same opinions over and over from other people and I’m hoping for a new perspective.
Are you sure transferring to a college closer to your home would be more expensive? Sounds like you’re wasting a lot of time commuting.
Work in a job for a few years, save money, then head for a school you like with a major you want.
First of all, I am sorry you feel that way! Is it possible for you to get a part-time job during the year? Then you might be able to have some money to get an apartment during the year or live on-campus. It may also end up being cheaper than paying for all the gas to travel.
How are your grades? Try to find a school where housing is a part of your financial aid package. Some schools even guarantee housing for transfers.
