I am I sosphmore in high school and i am being forced by the parents to be on the field hockey team at my school. The team has no JV team so if you participate you are automatically on the varsity team. I have done it for two seasons now and I hate it so much. I hate the sport itself and i am not close with any of the girls in the team. I resent ever joining the team and i hate going to practice and playing in games. This next season I want to quit because I really have no reason to stay other than it looking good on an application. My grades and very good and i do other clubs and community service. I also toutor kids from the elementary school nearby. Will quitting a sport after two years make it look like I give on things easily and make schools not want to accept me. I really dont want to have to put myself through another two years of a sport I hate just so I can say to an admissions board that I did it.
Colleges will not reject you for not playing a sport.
If you hate the sport, drop it. Playing a sport will not make a difference in your admission.
Fantastic username, by the way.
Drop the sport right now. Tell your parents that you have too many other activites that you actually enjoy doing, and that doing something time consuming that you hate is a great way to compromise your grades. Grades must be your first priority. Test scores are also important, and time wasted doing sports could be better spent doing test prep.
You will absolutely get into college without a sport. My D never played a minute of any sport and got into 9 excellent colleges. It is a thousand times better to do activites that you enjoy. Doing something you hate will add nothing to your application.
Drop the sport and never mention it again. Telling admissions officers that you don’t play sports because you “hate” sports will not help you either.
Focus on loving your other activities.
Unless you are recruited a sport is just another EC. Do what you like.
You need to drop it for the sake of the team.
When you play sports, each personality is “felt” throughout the team. There is a thing called team bonding and trust. Team sports tend to rely on each player.
Don’t you think the other members feel your “hate” towards the sport?
The Coach probably feels your anger through your play. I suspect you are not really great at the sport? If you were to love it, that would be a different thing.
You need to drop it, for you, as well as the team.
Another vote for dropping the sport. Unless you are a recruited athlete, a varsity sport counts for no more than any other club you can get involved in. So do something you enjoy and chances are you passion will start to shine through. Neither one of my kids did a varsity sport and they both did just fine in terms of college admissions.
Why do your parents require you to play a sport? What is their reason? Agree with others that colleges won’t care and it sounds like you have other EC’s which make the sport even less important.
I would vote to drop the sport and replace the time spent with something that matters more to you in one of your other EC’s or pick a sport that you enjoy or want to learn. Maybe not a HS level but a club level sport through a local community center or recreational league.
