I'm going into my senior year of high school and I've played field hockey since 7th grade, and was on the varsity level last year. I also played softball with my school since 7th grade as well, and did outside leagues before that, and was put othe jv team in 8th grade. In 11th grade however, I had some issues with the team and coach (nothing too bad) and decided I'd rather not play so I stopped and didn't play that year. This year I'm not going to play agin but I'm now also considering dropping field hockey as well seeing as I'm having similar frustrations over the drama of the team and the coach's inappropriate favoritism. I do an excessive amount of extracurriculars such as concert orchestra, chamber orchestra, jazz choir, the school musical, national honor society, tri-m honor society, drama club, and two different volunteer clubs and a few other things. Will it have a big impact on my chances during the application process if I drop field hockey?

The key to good EC’s is DO WHAT YOU WANT! NEVER do an EC - or NOT do an EC because of what someone may think. And you don’t even have to put in your app why you decided to drop them either.

My son dropped wrestling after 2 years in HS and got in ED to his school. If some school or Admin doesn’t like you for who you are, too bad for them - there is some school out there that will appreciate what you have done.

My $.02 and worth every penny…good luck

No I definitely know not to just do things for the sake of college I love all my stuff and I do love field hockey I just don’t see the point of stressing my self out both emotionally and physically for a sport I’m not even going to continue in college outside of maybe club or inter murals…my parents are the main problem because they think I should continue it and that I’m just lazy but I’d rather drop it and get like a job or something more purposeful to fill the time…

If the negatives outweigh the positives, then don’t play field hockey. And vice versa.

Sports offer a lot of character-building opportunities that may or may not be found in other ECs. Participating in sports offers the health and fitness benefit, which is very important. If you don’t play field hockey next year, be sure to find another way to stay fit.

Well, if you want my personal opinion, I don’t think you should let other people get in the way of your interests. By the sounds of it, you love the sport but just hate the team. Personally, I would just keep doing it for the sport and just try to annoy the people that annoy you.

I wrestle, for example, and although I pretty much hate 90% of the clowns on the team, I still keep doing it because I love the sport.
