Damn this Why Penn essay. I’m stuck. I originally wrote a 3700 word essay mentioning EVERYTHING, but my guidance counselors and teachers tore it to shreds, telling me i have to cut it down to a page or two and have to have more “voice” and creativity. So…now im stuck. What do they want? Do they want creativity or do they want to see that you know about the school and why you want to go? Idk about you, but i see a difference between the two…I dont know how to be creative while talking about the different programs that Wharton has. Mainly im just venting here while im trying to write, but if anyone has any suggestions (REAL suggestions) as to how to get started, i would really appreciate it.

well the way i'm interpretting it is
is you show something about yourself
and tell how upenn fits that something
for example if you have a flair for interior decorating, and penn somehow has the best interior decorating in the world, then it's a match.
but that's just out of the blue.

ummm...i'm naturally a more creative person so instead of regurgitating the college brochures and stuff on the website (which IMO is hard to do and still sound sincere) i wrote about a day at penn. this way, I could talk about all the stuff i love about the curriculum, campus, activities, etc. but still have "voice" or watevs. sorry ur teachers tore ur paper to shreds. maybe just write up a skeleton of a new essay and take snippets of ur original one to fill in the spaces. hope that helps...it makes sense in my head, not so sure how it comes across tho. lots of luck!

There is no word limit right? Is there a suggested limit (from thosewith experience)?

Hey supermodl...thanks for ur help...im actually a very creative person too...but for this essay, im having writer's block like never before...can you give me some info on this "day at penn" idea. It sounds interesting. Like...you pretend you're at penn and you're visiting all these programs and clubs you like or what? I promise i won't steal your idea dont worry :)

o infinity...the penn app does not list a word limit...but it advises you to keep your essays to a page...and from what i've heard, that is what the admissions officers want...they probably won't read anything over 2 pages at most.

hahah suprmodl. i was going to write an anecdote about a day at penn too. but meh. not anymore. grwol......

well booboo I'm sure urs turned out awesome anyway! haha. jake, i just pretended i was already at penn and went thru (what i imagine to be) a typical day. like i named the class i'm on my way to and that leads to me talking about my major/concentration/minor and then u should say ur off to a club meeting/practice/rehearsal and that leads to talking about extra-curriculars. i can e-mail it to u if u want: it's very ME so i'm not too worried about u copying me. unless ur very girly, plan on going into fashion, are a dancer, wanna b a sorority girl, etc. in that case, i'll have to think about it. hehe. my essays are both exactly one page. single spaced. size ten verdana (not as small as it sounds). lots and lots of luck everyone!

or if u want, check out this essay. really different from my "day at penn", but might help get u unblocked! http://www.essayedge.com/college/essayadvice/course/well_done_school_essay.shtml

Haha...can u really e-mail it to me? That'd be awesome...i don't know too many people who would be willing to do that...you must be exceptional lol... My e-mails twodollabeer@yahoo.com ...if i get into wharton i'll be your best friend forever...we could start a clothing line together :)

sent babes.

My eyes are hurting from staring at the computer screen for too long...gosh...:(

Do you think it's ok to use an essay from another school? I had to write about a "significant life experience" for Fordham and I just happened to write about a time I took a risk. The essay is about 600 words so I think it's alright to use, I sent it to my English teacher from last year who I got to know pretty well, and she gave it the seal of approval. It's pretty to the point, do you think admissions will appreciate this or will it be a gamble since some people may have more in depth essays with no word limit?

600 words is already alot.
going over 600 isn't always better

Try writing something you noticed about Penn that you DIDN'T see listed in the brochures.

I wrote about how I saw someone in a clown suit perched in a tree above locust walk throwing pamphlets down.

I also wrote about Penn's comparative political centrism compared to the extremism of other schools (cough Columbia cough)

I wrote how I liked Penn's student body size but campus design that funnels the masses into one nexus of Penn-ness.

And some other stuff

At least you guys have been there...I am writing...literallly writing... with a picture in my head. Oh gosh.

Yeah flameball I feel your pain. No matter how hard i try...its just not coming out lol...and now my counselor wants both of my essays by tomorrow....i love penn but, seriously, this essay is not cool.

How long are everybody's essays? It says "Please do not exceed on page" so I am NOT EXCEEDING one page. But I read some people's post, and some of you guys are literally writing a book...I am confused.

where does it say that?

On the application. "Your essay should not exceed one sheet"...
