Hey guys, now bear with me I have a few questions about next year that the UMD class of 2017 page cannot answer:

My first question is with regards to honors housing. Where exactly do Honors students dorm? And what are the dorms like (air conditioning, condition of building, wifi/internet speeds, et.al.)

My second question is with regards to class availability. I am scheduled for the July 15-16 orientation and I am in the University Honors program. Will the classes be mostly filled by then (even the honors ones)? I am a computer science major if that helps at all.

My last question is with regards to food at Maryland. Likes/dislikes?

Thanks again to anyone who answers!

no worries!

with regard to honors housing, it depends on your program. HH and DCC are in South Campus, and the rest are usually in the ellicot community. EIP and ILS are in LaPlata, Gemstone and ACES are in Ellicot, and UH is in Hagerstown. Only LaPlata has AC. The buildings are alright and the wifi is decent.

If you are registered for July 15, then yes, most of the classes will be full, but I still think you’ll be fine.

As for the food, pretty much every maryland student will admit that the food is pretty crappy to say the least. however stamp food court has some nice options for a change and there are some nice places to eat off campus.

I’m confused. If most of the classes are full when you show up for the July 15th orientation, what are you supposed to do? Sign up for whatever scraps are left even if they’re completely irrelevant? Do they subsequently add additional core classes? If you switch to the June 25th orientation will that make a significant difference in what’s available?

No worries. There are some classes that are only available for first-time freshman/new transfers. Seats for those classes only “open” at orientation.

In addition, the basic classes (like math, science, etc) that everyone needs will have a few additional seats that magically appear/open on each day of orientation. The caveat is that the later your orientation date, the more likely the only reserved seats left are for the less desirable class times (aka 8 a.m.) Mid-July is not bad.

Don’t worry about having to waitlist a class. Throughout the entire summer, students are constantly adding/dropping classes as they switch their schedules around. So, it’s possible you can be #20 on a waitlist for a required class, and still get in before school starts. The waitlist starts to move faster in late summer. Another thing about the waitlist is that when a waitlist gets to a certain number, they sometimes add an additional section. However, you need to know this is only for classes that have a lot of sections to begin with. It doesn’t apply to classes that are smaller by design (the more interesting electives) to begin with.

As for op’s questions about food…
My understanding is that the once a week 251 North meals are actually pretty decent in comparison to regular dining hall food, and that if you have a class near south campus dining hall, it’s worth getting a meal there because food is a little better than than north campus dining hall. Some favorite off-campus meals are pizza from Ledo’s, DP Dough (they deliver) and Krazi Kabob.
