Hi all,

Due to some bad decisions, my freshman year ended with a 3.35 and my sophmore year ended with a 2.98.... I got a heads up and I started studying... My Junior year I got a 3.9 and a 3.95 (second semester)... My SAT score is a 2140. I did a TON of clubs and all my time was spent into that 9th and 10th grade so my grades suffered. I have taken several AP classes and gotten scores of 4. What are my chances of getting into universities (esp UW Seattle...)????? I will try to write a killer essay... I also have over 400 volunteer hours...

Look up the Common Data Set for UW, sections C7-C10.

Your profile suggests that you are someone who can throw yourself into projects (witness the club and volunteering activities); this is a trait that is attractive to many admissions officers because it demonstrates the potential for passion in your work. What they’ll also appreciate is an ability to learn from your mistakes (as you did after sophomore year–three o’s in sophomore) and, of course, your academic potential as indicated by your SAT and junior year GPA. (Is there any balance in that profile, too? did you abandon all clubs and volunteer activities in your junior year or were you able to keep some activities while getting great grades?) So things are not as bleak as you make them out to be. In fact, they’re quite promising.

You need more schools than just UW, and you could make our job a lot easier by suggesting some major or majors you might want to pursue, regions of the country that are out of bounds, school size, private or public, etc. Finally, and most importantly, have your parents told you how much money they can offer you each year? have you run the net price calculators on any schools and had The Talk?

Hi. Thank you so much for your reply. I greatly appreciate it. I quite some ECs but continued on w/ Tennis, Leadership, and Knowledge Bowl. I will be applying to more schools, but UW is the school I really want to get into. Yeah, my parents and I have had the “talk”… They will be able to pay for my education up to 300k for 4 years… after that, I’m on my own.

I can’t imagine that it will come to 300K, but let’s save some of that generosity for grad school or a mortgage.

Do you want to look at a half dozen more school possibilities? if you do, give us some stats, possible majors, and a region of the country.
