on my test and i never seem to nail them.
does anyone have suggestion on how to strengthen them and make them stronger.
the teacher is very picky.

Heh, I just had a history essay today! The best thing to do it review the material you have on the subject. My teacher gives up pretty good study guides (which are mostly just outlines of what we are going to be talking about during a particular unit). If you have one of these I would go through it and make a sheet (or 4 sheets, whatever) of notes. Make sure you understand what all of the data is and that your are not just writing down stuff from your textbook or whatever.

It's probably a good idea to make an outline if you know the prompt before, but if you only find out the day of, then just make a list of what your paragraphs are going to be about.

Also, Opening and Closing paragraphs are pretty much meaningless on these types of essays. Teachers usually just want to see the fakes and analysis that shows that you understand what you are writing about. I usually write the background info in the first part of the body paragraphs and then the analysis at the end.

what's the essay on anyway?

thanks benellis! i think your advice helped a lot.
i think i did pretty well on that essay, but umm i will have to find out tomorroww!

& i had a few of the possible essays ahead of time and i chose to write about this one:

Who had the greatest impact of unification in his country and what did he do? (we are doing german and italian unification)

I think i had a well constructed essay on Otto Von Bismarck!

what was yours about?

My essay was on Totalitarianism in the government and social policies of the Soviet Union... I like your essay topic better (I forget, but I think we had an essay on something similar when we did that).

ahaha i'm a freshman but the teacher is brutal. sounds easy, i thought i did well, but i know she is going to tear it apart. ahhh oh welll. she is a miserable woman.

me too. It's actually a DBQ essay on the Roaring Twenties (for APUSH)..and I just finished it....which is why i'm on CC right now.
