I have a little dilemma and any advice would be great!

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this. I am about to start my junior year and I am kind of stuck. I want to take AP Statistics senior year and in order to do that, it is preferred that I take Advanced Functions and Modeling this year. People are telling me that I should take AP Calculus AB or BC senior year, but in order to do that, it is required that I take Precalculus this year. So this is my problem, do I continue with taking AFM this year and take AP Statistics next year? Or should I do what others say is best and take Precalc this year and AP Calculus AB or BC next year?
Oh and if it helps clarify things, I plan on going into Premed and becoming a doctor. Thanks for the help!

Precalc and AP Calc by far. AP Stats is seen as an APlite and not taking precalc will hurt you significantly. Plus as a premed, you’ll most likely have to take both in college anyways.

Calculus is more important, because both it and Pre-calculus are more general and essential. They’re more so considered to be core math classes, while statistics is more of an elective. Plus, Calculus is a required undergraduate level course for medical school, and I don’t think Statistics is.

You could just take Pre-calculus this year and possibly squeeze your way into both AP Statistics and AP Calculus next year, since AFM is “preferred,” if that’s possible with your planned schedule.

Pre-Calc & Calc are more important. However, you might be able to talk with your guidance counselor now on whether it’s possible for you to take both AP Calc & AP Stat in senior year if you really want to do Stat. My kid was able to do that although it meant bumping her down in Social Studies to the non-Honors class because of scheduling (since she wants to do STEM, that was ok by her).

I would recommend taking pre-calculus and calculus if you can. Remember that “pre-med” usually isn’t a major in itself, and you can major in anything and go to medical school as long as you meet all their requirements.

Thank you all!!
