So, I am taking Pre-Calc right now (I’m a junior). I am picking my classes for next year cause I was unprepared and it as a nightmare, but I have a dilemma the Calc Honors (he teaches some AB Calc class too) and he’s really bad. He can’t tech at all. It’s really bad. All his classes are failing and I don’t know whether I should Honors and suffer or take AB and risk it to hopefully get the good AB Calc teacher. Then, I don’t really want to take Stat but it’s an open option still. I don’t even know what to take, I got recommended for Calc Honors but I said I wasn’t sure I just want a good GPA at the end on next year. What do you think?
If you are doing well in pre-calc then take AP Calc. If you aren’t then take AP stats.
What major are you thinking of? My daughter took Pre-Calc Honors and then Stats, never took Calculus and does not need it in her major at her college. Some majors will require it in college. If you will need it, imo it would be better to learn what you can now and get help from a tutor, another student, etc. so that you are prepared for college. Take a look at the colleges you are interested in and see what their course requirements are.
Also, can you meet with your guidance counselor and request the other teacher? If you are currently getting a C or lower, I would discuss with your counselor his advice for Calc Honors vs AB. At our high school, you need a B or better for Calc AB. Good luck!
Having now idea how your classes are set up so this may be totally not applicable but here goes:
My kids HS does block scheduling - 4 classes per semester 4 per day. All courses are full credit in one semester. However, AP classes are almost all year long comprised of one honors credit for first semester and one AP credit for second semester. What frequently happens in calculus is students drop after the first semester and receive an honors math credit (not sure if it counts as calculus). This happens similar in many other ap’s.
What grade are putting getting in pre-calculus honors?
What major are you thinking of?
If you’re thinking medicine, AB calc would be best but if you don’t wanna risk struggling too badly then take AP stats since that’s equally if not more important than AB calc since you use more reasoning and such
AP Stats can be pretty useful if you’re not too interested in math.
If you take calculus you can learn a bunch from Paul’s Online Math Notes, even if the teacher is poor. For me, calculus was far more interesting than intro stats.
I actually dropped Pre Calculus Honors to take CP Pre Calculus because I have too many APs and it affected my grade; in there I have an 82 at the moment and I want to major in Biology to go to medical school to study to become a neurologist.
