i’m a junior in high school, who has a low GPA and i recently have taken the SAT. the reasons i have a low GPA was due to personal issues, and stuff outside of school. and my SAT score is 1060, this was my first time taking the SAT. some community college also has this program where high school juniors and seniors can get early college credit, i plan on doing that and i will take a AP language class next year. like is there any possible way that i can still be admitted into some of the colleges of my choice or i’m most likely going to be in community college ?
What is your unweighted GPA and your SAT breakdown? What schools are you targeting? You have all summer, so consider a SAT prep class or try the ACT. You can take the ACT in September and retake SAT in Oct/Nov before most of the college applications are due.
i’m not sure of my GPA right now, all i know is that it is a low GPA. and my SAT breakdown was
440-critical reading
260-math
360-writing
the schools i would like to attend are Howard University, Morehouse College, Prairie View A&M, Hunter College, Baruch College, University at Buffalo, suny and Binghamton University. i’m also a NY high school student, but i do happen to have family in the cities that these colleges are in.
I definitely think you should work on basic skills at a CC for now. I would have suggested test-optional colleges, except I think your scores show some fundamental weaknesses that you need to address before applying to four-year colleges.
You have the summer to study for the SATs. Those scores are very low. Did you practice at all. How do you get a 260 in math? That defies chance. Work your tail off to get better-take 100 practice tests over the summer. Go to a class that helps student prep. If you are serious about going to college you should show it by studying and improving those scores.
Many arts-focused colleges are also test-optional, but I suspect that the OP might have a lot of trouble navigating the application process at this point, and should work on basic skills more. I saw a son through auditions for performing arts. Visual arts schools will expect the OP to present a portfolio in person, if at all possible (accommodations can be made for students who live too far away from National Portfolio Day locations). The requirements vary from school to school, and are much too complicated for students/families to rely on this thread for. The OP can begin looking at Art Major threads in the CC Forum. I strongly recommend that he or she read through them before posting questions. If the OP has trouble understanding the threads and comments, then he or she is probably not ready to go through the application process for 4-year colleges, and should start out at a community college.
