i have a low GPA, wat do i do?

I have a 3.9 wGPA, 3.3ish uwGPA. Because I not a native english speaker, so my freshmen year did not have a good GPA. I even had trouble understanding teacher's instructions. Since then, my GPA is getting better. But overall its not that good. I go to a very competitve high school(147th in the nation). So the class rank is like top 30%. If i want to get in Georgia Tech, do i need to do something about the GPA? like explain the reason why i have a bad GPA?(My ECs and SAT are pretty good)

First, you need to determine the actual weighted GPA GTech will rely on. It does the following. It throws out all grades other than college prep courses -- language, English, math, lab science, and social studies. It then takes your unweighted grades in those and throws out all plusses and minuses, i.e., B- and B+ both equal a B or 3.0. It adds .5 to any honors or AP course in which you graded B or A. Thus, a B which equals 3.0 becomes 3.5 for honors or AP. It then calculates your new GTech weighted GPA. If after doing that you are still in the 3.7 range, you are the average admitted student to GTech. If you are significantly below that and don't have a high SAT, then consider providing some explanation

You could always apply to schools that don't have a high average gpa

To piggyback on Drusba's awesome post, I'm going to add that an upward trend in GPA looks great for colleges. They'd rather have a bright student who is approaching their pinnacle than a student who has already hit it and started to descend.

r u sure .5 is added for both honors and APs?
i took like 12 AP courses, and rest of them are honors.

Nothing is ever certain because they could change but that info is from a conversation with an GTech admissions officer a little over a year ago for which I kept notes and asked all the specific questions as to how it determines GPA. In same conversation also learned that it uses only the English and math sections of the ACT if you submit ACT and does not use composite, science or reading section.

Your GPA is fine. 3.9 weighted is a very high GPA, and 3.3 is average, but not bad.

I applied to GA Tech in 2003 (got in, but didn't go) and that was the way they did the GPA calculation then. They did add .5 points for all honors AND AP classes.

Are you a Georgia resident? If you are, you should definitely apply for HOPE. Tech is already an amazing bargain for even the OOS, but it is awesome for the in-state student who goes for free tuition!

My stats are similar, OP, except my GPA is 3.42 and my school does not weight it. If you really did take that many AP classes then you should be fine. I've only taken 8 honors and 2 AP and my GPA according to Georgia Tech's scale is a 3.68.

I would go in a heartbeat if it wasn't 2/3 male :(.

thats good. thank for the infos.

wat about the scales? My school has 91-100 for A,81-90 for B....... how does Georgia tech do it?
