I have a question about mid-year, too...

I'm taking the most rigorous classes my school offers, but I'm getting a solid "B" in one class. I've worked hard like any other class, but obviously, the teacher does not like how I present myself in her projects...and the problem is, she lets us have a pretty laid-back class without teaching any specifics and will bombard us with tests and projects. So my inevitable question is will the admissions office understand a senior year "B" when the rest of the classes are A's? Thnx.

What do you mean witll they understand a B? Your transcript is what it is -- 5 (or whatever number of) A's and 1 B. That is better than 4 A's and 2 B's but obviously worse than 6 A's and no B's.

ahh i just hate those teachers!

but is everyone in ur class getting a B? if dat's true then it's not your fault. at least everyone else in your school who's applying is also getting a B

Well what's going to happen is, an admissions officer will get your mid year report, shed a few tears, run to Pres Bollinger waving your mid year report...hand it to him....while Bollinger cries inconsolably and rips his hair out, the admissions officer, seeing his superior in such a position will run up to the rotunda of low library and jump off landing on Alma Mater and dying instantly. A few days later, the whole Columbia campus takes part in the ritual of burning the acceptance letters of slackers like yourself who got a B during their senior year in a large bonfire.....Columbia does not tolerate any imperfection at all....how dare you Thoughtful87! You should withdraw your application immediately!

Are you joking Thoughtful87? Get a grip and chill the F out! I know its a stressful process but chill out, you're only human, stuff happens.

Thnx, you guys, for the feedback! I know it's not reasonable for me to fret over a small detail in the big picture of apps... Thnx for putting things back into perspective.
Oh, and Shraf, I really appreciated that you took your precious time to write such a long reply that dripped of sarcasm. I'll make sure that I give you the same consideration next time you have anxiety over something.

Oh my goodness, Shraf, that was HILARIOUS...you should really be a comedian.

Thoughtful87, don't worry. I think I'm getting a solid B in AP Bio right now because my teacher hates me. As long as the rest of your report is consistent, one B is nothing to worry about. Besides, you already sent them a copy of your transcript with perfect grades leading up to senior year, no?

"but is everyone in ur class getting a B? if dat's true then it's not your fault. at least everyone else in your school who's applying is also getting a B"

Columbia has no way of knowing which teachers give everyone B's. You're SOL if you have a teacher like that.

Actually it depends on your highschool. My HS would send a little pamplet with the grade distribution of every class offered in the school to the colleges so that they would know where you stand compared to classmates...this was mostly because they didnt rank though. I guess that is pretty rare though, and is much easier to do in a small private school with 100 students per grade.

I doubt they read your pamphlet!

i would be surprised if they didnt refer to it when they were looking at my transcript since most of it wouldnt make very much sense otherwise though they do get quite a few applications from my school and are pretty familiar with things. They pretty much would look at it to get an idea of where i stand in the class, it is just like they would look at your rank, either way though I got in so I dont give a crap what they did or did not look at.
