i have a question on portfolio

does anybody know what schools look for the most in a portfolio?
i have many freehand sketches with pencil but no paintings or other creative art pieces. is that really bad??

from what i've heard, they look for a variety of media, i was sort of in the same boat, i had all pencil/charcoal/dark conte crayon.

i suggest maybe trying some pastel, or conte crayon to add variety and color. do some real interesting pieces like abstract with or without color depending on how you are inspired and then maybe trying something realistic, still life, self portrait, portrait, landscape etc. these kinds of things can be sometimes boring so there is a chance to make it really pop with lots of color! i saw a black and white drawing of an ostrich that looked good in black and white graphite but sooooooooooooooo soo much better with a huge area of red watercolor splashed around on the ostrich's face. it was really good.

and depending on the school to which you are applying they probaly won't really take into consideration technical drawings. i know u of o doesn't really care too much

overall suggestion is get more creative in your pieces instead of all realistic and observations/gesture drawings.

thank you jackht27.
im applying to carnegie mellon, notre dame, syracuse. if anyone has more ideas, please comment!!

As jack stated, they like a variety of media. I'd be also nice to throw in some figure drawings (whether sketches or final pieces).
I would highly suggest against including computer models (Autocad) unless they are damn amazing.
are you applying for undergrad or grad degrees?
I know that some grad schools (harvard) actually likes to see technical architecture drawings and models

im applying to undergrad

your pieces were really really good. i would try to add some more creative abstract pieces if you have time

and the photography was good too. that shows your creative eye for sure... that is something that is really important that you can capture something while it is happening and not just sitting in front of you.

Hi could I take a look at your portfolio too? I am working on mine as well and am trying to include a variety of different styles, techniques, etc.

For ucla, they required 3 drawings.

I put a freehand color sketch, a model(pictures), and another drawing but architecture related.

look at what other schools are looking for to get a feel of what is required (like specific subjects and stuff). they are usually around the same drawing requirements so that it is easier for you to apply to a lot of schools instead of just one

uhm, i'll show you it, but can i say that...i'm so busy i havent really drawn anything since....okay, maybe when i was like 12?

like totally legit, my portfolio sucks butt.

this is mine.
a lot of it is photography. my drawings are at the back.

nice photography...i only posted my college portfolio - my photo portfolio is another set.

i love your photos!

how did you shoot the one of the moon??

i would love to do that, i just thought it wouldn't come out. i would have loved to take a shot of that eclipse the other night, i had a GREAT view of it.

also i love the one drawing you did of the torso. the blue background one. that is phenomenal. what medium did you use?

those photos were actually taken with a very standard, simple digital camera.

i just bought a professional one - a digital SLR - with some sick lenses...i'll be posting photos soon after i take some really good ones. this camera is AMAZING...its the canon rebel xti if you wanna look it up. sold everything in my room to get it haha.

i DID take a picture of the eclipse..i'll upload them sooner or later...you can check it out in the next week if you wish.

thanks..i really liked drawing the torso - its one of the only recent drawings i've done. it's just white conte on a sheet of blue charcoal paper. its a statue at carnegie mellon university.

wow, i love conte. it's my favorite medium. i don't know if i have white, i have this great rust colored one. that's the one i used on one of my portfolio pieces.

i would love to see the eclipse picture...
yeah i have like this cheap hp photosmart that i use ocasionally, that takes great pictures. that's cool that you were able to shoot that.

right now i use an old canon t50 from like 1987 haha. i am looking into getting a nikon
d45 or whatever... the canon rebel takes great shots, i think its a little out of my price range. i think i would have to sell everything in my room to get it hahah

ITS WORTH IT! i sold like 10 of my autographs to get it, but ITS WORTH IT!

im hardly materialistic, but its the one thing i own that i sleep with. i almost sold one of my surfboards, too...gasp!

anyways, nikon's nice, too, but unless you're REALLY into editing stuff, a canon still produces better pictures.

wait a couple of months...like april/may - the rebel xti's price will decrease LOTS! canon just came out with a new one - the rebel xsi (its really not that much different...just takes a different memory card, is slightly faster, and has bigger megapixels)...right now you can probably get a rebel xti for 800 with 2 lens...sooner or later it'll go down to like 600 for the body and 2 lenses.

why am i even studying architecture? who knows? haha...maybe ill just quit and go into photography...

hahaha autographs by who!? i would never sell the autographs i have...they're proably not worth much anyway.

yeah i would obsess over my camera.
i think i will get one over the summer after i save some money up. i like the bargain of the nikon. it is all i need, after all i'm not professional.

seriously though, sometimes i wonder why all this architecture stuff is worth all of the effort and slaving away over. i better make some good money. :/ hahah

autographs by a few celebrities - i dont really care about them much...i'm not into the whole hollywood/celebrity scene (although some are actually talented..and it if not, beautiful people haha)

good luck on your camera!

sometimes i even wonder why i'm goign to college. dude seriously, we've been going to schol for AT LEAST the last 13 years. and to go for 5 more years (us poor archies :[) is too much for me. im thinking gap year...but probably won't - the 'rents would murder me.

ahaha true dat.
however, most schools you can study abroad for a year. my parents are encouraging me to do it. so i guess going to denmark to study architecture for an entire year is totally a gap year in itself.

how much did you get for an autograph? lol. i mean 100 dollars for an illegible scribble by lindsay lohan is totally sold on me.

my secret dream is to buy a yacht and just float around the world.

too bad it'll never happen. i'll probbably be in debt and starved to death when you find me off the shore of like...antarctica.

anyways, studying abroad with architecture is amazing - i just hate that all of them are in italy or spain. i mean, yeah, nice stuff, but i wanna go to china (again!) or japan for the modern stuff. dont get me wrong, MAJOR PROPS and LOVE to classical and traditional architecture, but im into modern architecture a lot more.

denmark's pretty sweet as far as i know. its supposedly the happiest country in the WORLD. i've never been there, but i've hosted a girl from there. isn't that random? it was for basketball...they all looked the same - all blond, tall, either drop dead gorgeous or butt ugly.

anyways - autograph wise - most sold for like 50-75 dollars. i didn't care much. the following relly ****ed me off though was i sold HEATH LEDGER's 2 days before he died. okay, you might say - its worth like HUNDREDS now...but i loved that guy. he was so sweet when i met him and so humble. i would have loved to keep his autograph just because it was him. what a pity. stupid people trying to sell his stuff now are actually getting on my nerves. good grief.
