I transferred to a new university 3 years ago and immediately chose media production as my concentration because this was what I wanted to do. There were only a few core classes to take and the rest were electives (for example web programming, video editing, and multimedia).

At my college every communications major takes the same basic classes. This is when my doubts began. First I noticed that there were plenty of journalism & PR students in my classes and I felt that they were learning more important fields than mine. Second, I felt anxious when I browsed the job boards and internship opportunities early on and found only a few openings for media production majors. I began to have negative thoughts of limiting myself to only media production, and I browsed various online career forums. In short I scared myself away from this career path.

I switched to journalism for a semester, felt that it wasn't for me and since then I have stuck with corporate communications because I felt that I would have a wider variety of career choices.

Here's the problem: my education in corporate communications has been less than adequate because at my college it is simply a collection of courses taken from other communications majors. Instead of specializing and becoming great at one particular thing I had to learn a variety of things. For example I took courses such as "effective meeting management", "persuasion" and "organizational communication theory." In contrast the PR, journalism and advertising students were learning in a more straightforward manner: principles & theory, applied writing, and finally campaign/project experience.

My questions are:
Is it better to specialize in one area of communications for your future career prospects or should we take the liberal arts approach and learn a variety of skills?

Which communications major potentially offers the greatest opportunity for employment after college?

Was I too hasty to change my major from media production or should I have waited until I found the right job or internship?
