I have some questions about living at Princeton, dorm stuff

Do I need to bring cooking utensils?

Are there stores nearby where I can buy school supplies/living necessities?

There is free laundry. What about laundry detergent?

I drink a lot of water. What do I do if I'm studying late at night and feel thirsty? Do I need to go to a vending machine and buy water? Do people drink the tap water?

Do students buy clothes? If so, where? Or do they bring enough clothes for every occasion?

Do I need stationery items, such as markers, colored pencils, paint?

Is it necessary to have my own cleaning supplies?

Do I need a sleeping bag?

Thanks

Do I bring clothes hangers?

How much space is in the wardrobe/dresser?

Should I bring swimming stuff?

Where do people keep their wet towels after showering? Is there a place to hang it in your room?

Where can I buy a floor lamp?

Should I bring a small TV?

If you want to cook, you need to bring cooking supplies

There are lots of stores on rte 1, you can get there by bus

You need laundry detergent

You can drink tap water, you can get a brita

There are places to buy clothes, most people bring a lot of clothes and then sometimes go shopping. There are some clothes stores on nassau st (jcrew, banana republic, ralph lauren, and then a couple of boutiques) There is also a mall that is accessible by bus

If you want stationary then you would need it.

If you want to clean your room then you would need your own cleaning supplies. If you happen to have your own bathroom then you are responsible for cleaning it, if you want it to be cleaned.

If you plan on participating in OA, or the OA training activities you would need a sleeping bag.

You need to bring/buy hangers

Depends on the room

Can’t hurt

We bought over the door hooks

Target/Walmart?

If you want to watch tv, you should bring a tv.

Do I need to bring cooking utensils?

As a freshman, you will be on a meal plan so there’s absolutely no need to cook for yourself. If you really want to, however, go for it.

Are there stores nearby where I can buy school supplies/living necessities?

The U-Store on campus has a lot of the things you’ll need, including school supplies and things like shampoo, etc. They can be pricey though, so you may want to check out the CVS which is right on Nassau street and is generally cheaper.

There is free laundry. What about laundry detergent?

You need to bring your own.

I drink a lot of water. What do I do if I’m studying late at night and feel thirsty? Do I need to go to a vending machine and buy water? Do people drink the tap water?

The tap water in Jersey is fine. Otherwise, the Wa, the U-Store, and the C-Store are open late if you want bottled water, and there are vending machines all over the place as well.

Do students buy clothes? If so, where? Or do they bring enough clothes for every occasion?

Generally people bring their clothes with them. If you want to shop, there are a lot of stores on Nassau like the ones mentioned by the person above, but they tend to be expensive. The bus can also take you to the mall which won’t be as bad.

Do I need stationery items, such as markers, colored pencils, paint?

Not really, unless you’re planning on taking some kind of art class. I stick with pencils, pens, and the occasional highlighter.

Is it necessary to have my own cleaning supplies?

Depends how clean you are! I have a roommate who is obsessively clean and wouldn’t survive without her own cleaning supplies but you certainly can live without them. That’s the sort of thing that I would come without, because it’ll be easy to buy here if you need it.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

If you’re coming on OA, (which you should be because it’s awesome!) you should bring a sleeping bag. (Synthetic materials only!) My roommates have borrowed my sleeping bag once or twice but in general you don’t need one.

Do I bring clothes hangers?

Do you want to hang up your clothes? Then yes.

How much space is in the wardrobe/dresser?

Varies by room. My dresser this year is pretty small (probably about 2’x2’x4’) but they can be bigger.

Should I bring swimming stuff?

Probably yes, but you don’t need to.

Where do people keep their wet towels after showering? Is there a place to hang it in your room?

Up to you. There isn’t usually a place designed for hanging towels.

Where can I buy a floor lamp?

The U-Store will probably have one, otherwise you’ll probably want to check you the Walmart or Target as suggested above.

Should I bring a small TV?

If you want. Some people have them, some don’t. The ones I know of are mostly used for video games rather than actual TV since everything’s online.

about water - there is this amazing thing called late meal that you can go to twice a day on weekdays if you have the unlimited meal plan. They have bottled water, snapple, yogurt, milk, etc. You’re allowed to get two pre-packaged items every time you go (they also have meal-type food) and spend up to $5.95 for late lunch and $6.95 for late dinner. This is where my roommates who drink bottled water get it from.

Concerning the cooking question–Princeton is strict about not allowing hot plates, electric kettles, etc. in dorm rooms. Do all freshman dorms even have communal kitchens?

Yes. But you will rarely need it.

Where can I buy laundry detergent?

cvs or the ustore, or go to route 1, and then wegmans, walmart, or target

Where do people keep their tooth brushes and shower materials? In a caddy in their room that they take back and forth to the bathroom? Or in the bathroom?

When I went to Princeton Preview, my host had a little bucket where he kept his shampoo, toothbrush/paste, etc.
