Hi all, I am very very sad with my GPA, it is only 3.38UW.
I am at a IB school (highest GPA: 3.9) and take HL Bio, HL Math, HL History, HL theatre, SL english and franch. I just came to United states last year for my junior year at a boarding school, so I was adjusting myself to the language and classes and having some rough times trying to figure out how to write papers and do DBQs… Anyway, I had a C in one of my biology test, which pulled my grade from A- to B. I had a C for a big essay for English, which eventually pulled my grades from A- to B. I had B all the time for history, though I think only two people had A. And I struggled math because I never learned some of the materials before while my classmates learned it during their pre-IB years. My second semester was better, as I end up with A- for Biology and B+ for math.

Anyway, I have now uw 3.38, which will put me to 50% in my class. My school doesn’t weigh gpa for ranking either…students taking all SLs are now ranked higher than I am.

I am really worried. I have very strong ECs and cycling took all my free time. I have good ACT/SAT s and a good letter with emphasis on my character.
How important is GPA/class rank in Brown’s admission process? Do they agree that it is ok to mess up a little bit sometimes?

Your school may not report ranking. Your grades for the first two years of high school will also count; if they are superb, that helps. But, your difficulties adjusting will raise a warning flag- a top Ivy League college may feel that you will struggle with their academics, too. Whatever you decide, don’t focus on how hard it was to adapt and catch up. Focus on how you faced the challenge and made progress to master it.

Ginny - The past is the past. What you need to focus on is the future. The state of your mental health is going to be important for the next couple of months (I’m assuming your a senior). Relax. Put your best foot forward with your application and let the decision fall to the Brown admission counselors! Do as well as you can from here on out. Don’t worry about the past classes - these officers are trained to study the “strength of the curriculum” offered at your school.
