I will chance back (leave link please!). Thank you so much

I would say Duke is a match and UNC is a high matche… of course with the legacy part its possibly safe to say it may be even a high match as well… your commitment and passion for the arts are great and your standardized tests look pretty legit as well… you my friend have a good chance of getting accepted… as for merit based scholarships you also have a good chance… you have a good strength in your curriculum, your standardized tests are good, you seem to exemplify good leadership, but the winning factor would have to be your essay and that’s all you… but I am confident you will write a good one!

Thank you so much for the vote of confidence. The essay is the part of the application that I am most worried about but should be able to pull it off.

I may be wrong, but I believe UNC merit scholarships (excluding the Morehead) are largely reserved for in-state kids. They get a bunch of their money from OOS tuition, so I doubt they’d be particularly generous with aid.

Wow, I don’t know what you were talking about when you said my stats were better than yours! I’m not exactly educated in this, but I say you give most kids a run for their money when it comes to an application. I wish you the best!

@glassesarechic – thanks for the heads up…for some reason I was under the impression that they gave more merit aid than just the Morehead Cain (as my school is not a nominator I am slightly disappointed :()

@unicorns – Thank you so much, I am really worried about the “leadership” (something you have and I really dong – this is why your stats are more impressive) I have no experience in student gov’t (something that many appealing applicants have) I have never been a captain of a sports team (partially because at a small school like mine the only team that elects a captain is the lax team) no great clubs like FBLA (all clubs are student made and ran…therefore we have many napping clubs/ping pong/video game clubs) nothing like HOBY etc…Sorry for going on a rant, I am very stressed.

I would think UNC would be more difficult than Duke for you, just because you’re out of state and they’re only allowed to take 10-20% out of state or some low number like that. Duke though, I’m jealous. You’re solid on every point, about average SAT, good GPA and EC’s. I think you have a good chance at Duke.

They do–for bizarre reasons, like essays–but I believe it’s mostly reserved for the in-state kids they’re trying to lure away from Duke and other top schools.

And you’re correct, about 82% of slots are reserved for in-state (versus other top publics; even UVA is a third OOS), making OOS admissions utterly ridiculous.

I’d like to say something about the Morehead-Cain:
If your school is not a nominator, you should go to your counselor and ask them to nominate you. If you live in NC you can nominate yourself, but otherwise its one kid per high school. If not, there’s a 3rd party Duke-UNC-CH: the Robertson Scholars program that gives full rides. Go to their websit to find out more. [Robertson Scholars: Homepage](http://robertsonscholars.org/)

I got into UNC Honors, but not their program. It’s definitely not for everyone; probably wasn’t a good match for me. I won’t be going to UNC, anyways.

I’d say that UNC is a match or low reach–pending on your essays. Duke is probably a low to medium reach…again, essays. Try to get more leadership positions for your ECs. Otherwise, all is well

You seem like you’re definitely on track to get in. I agree, you seem fit for both Duke and UNC-CH other than essays. So jut do well on them and you’ll be fine :D

@Everyone…thank you for the very helpful responses!

“Try to get more leadership positions for your ECs. Otherwise, all is well”

Could someone give me some ideas on how to accomplish this? For some reason this has been the most difficult thing in the application process because there isn’t much available at my school for leadership (what there was I have taken advantage of, with the exception of student gov’t because it is a popularity contest at my school and…well…I’m kinda a nerd)

Here is my individual predicament:
Once club per year (i have been club leader of “rocketry club” for two years now)
There are two student run publications (newspaper - uninvolved. literary mag - photo editor)

Any suggestions on how to demonstrate more leadership in ECs??? The things like “student leadership conventions” or HOBY or People to People, for some reason, seem fake to me because they cost money – maybe I am mistaken. Any ideas on how to show leadership in the areas that I am interested in (Photo/Science + Math) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mr. HS.

You’re right. Colleges understand that these programs are based far more on your ability to pay than on merit. There are, however, several contests and opportunities available to you for free. Photo–enter Scholastics. Math/Science–AIME, USAMO, Intel, etcetc.

Thank you so much. Its funny though, I have competed in the AMC competition for years but never thought colleges would want to see that. Just this year I qualified for the AIME off of a 101.5 on the AMC 12 (pretty good considering that the minimum score was somewhere in the high 80s). AIME didn’t go so well (I estimate a 3 or 4 at the highest) but it was a good experience. Will this really be a worthwhile thing to put on a college app? Also, what is scholastics? Is that a competition? I’ve never heard of that. Anyway, thank you for your help. Much Appreciated, Mr. HS.
