i heard some things about UCLA

*** SPAM. Well actually Cal itself is not bad. I'm not down with NorCal. Actually NorCal is pretty cool, I'm just not down with NorCal WEATHER. No enrollment caps at USC worth the extra ~$20k per year(not sure if this value is correct)?

I love it at LA. It would be my top choice for med school, even over the tops like Harvard and what not. But then again few get to be picky about Med school.. cept maybe this one officer for AMSA who got accepted like EVERYWHERE!

academic rigor won't be much different either, at least for engineering.

...curve setting??

[QUOTE]

don't count on having only 3 days of class in engineering...

It is possible, if you take 3 courses. You can just skip recitation on Friday.
Even if you don't, you might have a chance at MWF, but 8-5.

You are right about the academic load. The UCs should be ABET accredited so the same curriculum will be covered.

so can you guys tell me the workload? Im still unclear about how much work engineering is other than the fact that you cant have any days off.

uh, crappy? like in any other engineering program that doesn't inflate your grades (coughStanfordcough)

wait for BoelterHall or Flopsy in the meantime....or Deuces.

Depends on how you manage your time and professors.

If you want to Facebook or do something unproductive all day, of course you're asking for trouble. If you get a little bit done everyday, you'll find yourself with free time.

If you have good professors, sometimes you don't need to read the book or go over notes/ask TA.

There have been times where I worked my ass off, got my ass chewed by professor for having a "bad" presentation or report. There have been times also where I didn't study anything, scored in top of class.

sliguy:

I have one kid in engineering at UCLA and another in engineering at UCSD - both CS majors. I'm very familiar with the field myself so I can compare them pretty well and I'd say they're very close. UCSD is definitely not 'easier' than UCLA in the CS major.

And both of my kids were accepted to Cal but chose their respective colleges instead. Not everone follows the Cal->UCLA->UCSD->(other UCs) paradigm.

If you're planning on going into CS, prepare to be busy.

UCSD has a lot of rabbits.

As an engineer, sometimes you can have days off.. classes start at 6pm!

moldau,

Cute fluffy ones.

just pace yourself with cs projects if you take a cs class, but i'm a freshman right now and the workload for math isnt that bad, basically just weekly homework due either on mondays or fridays, doesnt take too long. it almost seems like we have less work as engineers since all our homework is basically problem sets whereas north campus majors have to read everyday and do essays :p.

and even if you might not have a full day off, its possible to have really short days on like tuesday or thursday because there might just be a single discussion that day with no lectures.

Is it true that theres no honors program in the school of engineering? and therefore no other way to get priority registration?

yes you can't do honors... maybe if you double major or something... but look at it this way... non engineers can't sign up for engineering classes and all engineers don't have priority... so priority don't hurt us that much :)

why cant engineers have a full day off? What if im only taking 3 classes. Wouldnt that mean i only have three days of classes? sorry if this is an obvious question

For first, maybe even second, quarter it wouldn't be hard. Lectures are typically MWF, and each class would have one discussion. So if you plan it so that your discussions are mostly on the days you have lecture and/or either on only T or only Th, you'll have one day free.

I don't think that quite made sense but maybe you get what I'm saying

engineers can have a day off - it's not that uncommon, is it? i usually get tuesdays off and push all the discussions on thursday/friday.
