I just got accepted to UCLA last night (and UCSD a month ago) into the linguistics major. I guess for most people it's a clear choice to just go to UCLA. UCSD's linguistic program is pretty good, but UCLA's is better. I'm a SD local and would be able to live at home if I choose UCSD. I'm not worried about social/party scenes at either.

Honestly, I didn't expect at all to get into UCLA (my gpa is around 3.5) but now I'm considering it mostly because its location and reputation may help me to get a better job after graduation. But...I'd either be doing a crazy commute daily or have to move up there. I'm 24 and engaged to be married next year (and he wouldn't be able to move with me but thinks UCLA is an opportunity not to be passed up) so my goals are to save money if possible and get my degree as soon as possible.

Is UCLA's "prestige" worth the move?

What do you guys think?

Both are really good schools. UCLA definitely has the reputation to help you later, but it really depends on what you’re comfortable with. Maybe if you go to the UCLA and UCSD and talk to the advisers for your major, plus the general vibe. UCLA isn’t for everyone, the surrounding area is kind of different. I think that after you visit you’ll have a clearer idea.

No.

UCSD’s prestige is definitely still a strong competitor to UCLA’s.

Don’t ditch life for UCLA just because. It is not just a matter of ambition or hope or anything: the little bit of a plus UCLA will give you will be microscopic compared to your relationships and friends.

If you won’t fall for that, then think of financial repercussions. Think of the financial costs that making yourself move for 4 years (by yourself) will be. It will be you and your fiance paying for 2 different housing conditions, food, transportation, etc.

I should also clarify that you have an interesting scenario in that you already have a life, at the age of 24. Most others don’t have to worry about leaving a fiance and a community behind. Many CC transfers also are still semi-dependent on parents, and I assume you are not.

Let me first say I don’t think anyone here will have a answer you will see and think, “Yes! I’ll do that,” because none of us know what else you have going on in your life and other complications etc. That being said, hopefully you can take bits of what people advise to you here and make a decision yourself.

I’m assuming you have 2 years left to graduate so while I think the move will definitely impact you, it’s not permanent. I’m not sure of your financial status but the FA could help out a lot, I know it does for me. I’m not familiar with the linguistics programs at either school but you should definitely look into the opportunities at both. The ECs available in addition to the academics. For me, I’m a science major and am trying to decide between Cal or UCLA (while I may not even get into Cal). So what I’m looking at is the research opportunities at both schools. You should do likewise for your major because the education at SD or LA will be good in both cases.

That being said, I am bias towards UCLA in you’re position because of its recognition. Don’t get me wrong, SD is a good school too. But when you think about it, UCLA IS harder to get into so just the fact that you’re there already means something. People with 3.0s can TAG and get into SD. Despite the extra effort I think it’s really worth it. SD isn’t too far away too so you can still go back on weekends.

I agree with this guy. My last post was probably worded too brusquely.

However, it will be tough to go home on weekends. My boyfriend dorms at UCLA but goes home every weekend (average hour-90 minute trip), I can tell you right now that knowing SD’s commute, you will be very unlikely to go home except for long weekends/breaks. He leaves at 11-1 (he has to ditch any class ending past 1, otherwise the traffic going anywhere in LA steps up severely any time past 2), gets back 12-3 (respectively). He leaves on Sunday either in the middle of the night (avoids traffic) or sometime in the evening. However, SD will be a different story entirely. Gas + time + LA’s hectic homework/test schedule will make it really hard to justify going back home every weekend. My boyfriend is an engineer, so he has 6-8 midterms/quarter + finals, and after maybe the first 3 weeks when there are no midterms, he can barely spare weekend time.

That’s true. I’m from norcal so I’m not familiar with LA traffic. I have a friend that comes back from Davis on weekends which is a 1.5-2 hour drive so I didn’t think it was that bad.
My point was more of that she can go back to SD to see her fiance if she wanted to. At least its not something like she’s going to berkeley and driving back to SD for the weekend is absolutely ridiculous.

LA traffic is pretty much bad 7-10, 12-7 =(.

SD isn’t too far from LA, but with traffic (against traffic the whole way) it can push up to 2-3 hour stints…

But it is, of course, possible. In the end, it’s up to preference. I don’t care about reputation enough… So I guess I’m biased as well…

I guess I’m more bias towards reputation because if you’re looking to get hired you may run into people who are for the reputation and those who don’t care so you will have both points covered by going to a school like UCLA. But on the other hand you may also run into people who think people at UCLA and Cal are just the academic type and get stuff done…

Are you planning to go to grad school?

Of course UCB~! CAL is the best~!
