If you are on the waitlist and are out-of-state, you won't get off. The only people UVA accepts from the waitlist are in-state.

Why wouldn't they just reject the OOSers then?

When we visited UVA in April, our tour guide told us that he got in off the wait list. He was from New Jersey.

Lol, who did you hear that from, dazed? A pta mom or something? Your instate/OOS status may affect your status on the waitlist, but I don't think OOS'ers are blocked from getting in. What would be the point in waitlisting them?

Definitely false.

Also, UVA has a quota that they must fill this many spots with out of state students, so if they have 1 spot left and it happened to be Out-of-State Spot, they can't just give it to In-State

What is the middle 50% (or average) SAT for OOS applicants who were accepted? I can't seem to find it on the website. Everyone says it is higher, but I cannot find any nymbers.

I don't think they publish those numbers. Few schools do.

What do you mean it's higher? Yes, it's higher than instate...

Sorry for the ambiguity. I meant SAT's, etc. are higher for OOS than In-state, but I can't seem to find how much higher. My daughter may apply for OOS acceptance. She is competitive for overall stats, but I can't tell for OOS.

Generally OOSers would have at least the lower 1400 range, probably higher. I don't know if there's any specific info about that.

I spoke to an admissions dean about 5 days ago and he told me that the only school that has openings is the Arts and Sciences school. Unfortunately for me and the rest of the out-of-staters, the A&S is only lacking Virginians, meaning OOS waitlisted people probably won't be considered. He did tell me, though, that they will go over the applications once again this coming week and the final decisions will finally be made. Of course, things could've changed a bit and there could be openings based on the amount of people who intended to enroll at UVa that got off other waitlists and changed their mind and other possible situations. Keep your heads up!

dmason, that might be true this year, but probably not every year.

wonwon,

uva doesn't have a quota that it has to keep 1/3 oos, it just must keep at least around 2/3 instate. there are no guarrenteed oos spots - just guarrenteed instate spots.

It frustrates me that what happens one year suddenly becomes a "policy".

As I've written in my blog, the waitlist includes all sorts of students and once we know what the class looks like (when all the reply cards come in), we know how many can come off the waitlist.

One year, we may need x number of out of state engineers. Another, we might need in-state CLAS students. It changes each year.
